Sword Combos in TP

Would it be cool if Link could use fighting combos similar to the ones in Soul Calibur 2 or similar games?

Re: Sword Combos in TP

Do you meen the same moves he uses or the same button combinations to pull of moves?
I didnt really like Soul Calibur 2 that much because to get anywhere in the game you had to memorise so many button combernations and to me it didnt feel like a fighting game it felt like a memory game.
The moves Link has in SC2 are cool, I just couldnt get in there and fight because i was too busy trying to remember the button combos.
I like the moves in SC2 just not the way you have to remember millions of button combos just to pull em off.
The moves would look REALLY COOL in TP but i think they should make em easier to pull off.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

I havent played SC2, but from what I saw in trailers and gameplay movie's, it look's like Link can do the moves of tWW. The dodging roll back slash thing (whatever name that has) and some others.. I think he will have new ones too.

The moves from SC2 will most likely Not be in there.. actually, some might. Like the downwards stab finishing move (seen in SSBM)

Re: Sword Combos in TP

I heard somewhere a few months back that Link should be able to parry attacks and block them with his sword. Of course, this was most likely just a rumor, but I figured I'd drop it since we're talking about combinations and such.

It'd be nice if there were sword combinations, yeah. That would add to the one-on-one aspect of a sword fight.

Yes, since it hasn't existed since Dark Link.

I dont really think that Link needs combos in zelda, its not nessesary but its just not zelda style. I think its good as it is, plus the parry attack.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

I doubt the combos could be as complex as in SC2, given that we have just one sword button, but some flashy show-off moves wouldn't go amiss. Maybe being able to slide under the bigger enemies (Moblins, Iron Knucks, that big flaming dude etc.) for an easy finisher will return from the archives of SC2 coolness.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

well i just dont want them to influence the game in a way just like in POP Warrior Within, the amount of fighting and combos to remember spoilt a classic game.

You know they also have awsome combos in mortal kombat series. and yes it would be cool if you didn't have to learn them and get frustrated because you can't get it right the first time!

Re: Sword Combos in TP

I think that there will not be combos as such, but rather new techniques with the sword, what with the inclusion of the parry attack, and the jump and downward stab (from Super smash bros AND soul Calibur) and a kind of attack where you step on a fallen enemy, and stab him with your sword (in the same fasion as oot Link did, when he laid the master sword to rest).
Aonuma-san then said in an interview, that these are just a few of the new sword techniques that Link wil learn in the game.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

Sword fighting really needs more than just hack and slash, and it needs more the multiple button combos. There needs to be a way to use the control stick somehow to control the movement of the sword/weapon. More than just "Hold control stick up and press B to do an upstab" but actually moving your stick from the down position to up position for him to perform the movement. That's how I always pictured intuitive combat control with a gamepad.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

Actually Atreyu that is NOT a rumor (if they dont remove it from the game now). Because in the e3 demo there was a parry button. You could hold up your shield and then when the enemy attacked it came up a picture of te button B and it stod "parry" below it. Now if you pressed the button Link would parry the attack with his sword or he would bash his shield on the enemy.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

Too many different types of moves or combos transfers the focus from exploration to combat and then we have a generic action game. I don't think Nintendo should ever devote multiple buttons to swinging your sword because it is not necessary, over-complicates controls, and is a waste. Hugely combat intensive games get boring in an hour at most. I still think there should be enhancements (parry, shield bash, pause-effect, dodges ect), and the difficulty should be increased, but different attacking animations does not make a better game. For a move to be included, it must truly add new gameplay. Even then, adding too many "good" moves becomes redundant and alienates the casual fan.

Re: Sword Combos in TP

I agree with what most people have been saying. I dont think they need to add tons of extra combat combos and moves etc. I like the combat how it is thus far, and i dont really want Zelda to turn into a pure hack n slash game. So im content with the combat now.

Zelda's combat system is pretty perfect as it is, no point making it too complicated.
(SC2 rocked though)

I see absolutely no point to what you are saying. No matter how you look at it, having better combat can only improve the game. The combat right now is mediocre, changing bad combat to good combat would take away from the exploration how exactly?

In any case the exploration would only become better because not not only would enemies actually threaten you, but there would actually be an incentive to do side quests to get all those hearts that you never needed in OoT or WW.

Teh feel of the cambat is perfect, I agree, however actual fighting is impossible, there is no depth, no reason to dodge attacks, pre-timed moves as a substitute, simple ways that kill enemies 100% of the time without takign damage, in all respects it is terrible.

But do we need combos? Would they make the gmae any better? No, you simply need a few more moves and the ability to tweak the system a bit to allow depth.
