Okay, been working on some fixes for my scene/messing with the materials editor some more
(yikes it is still beyond me)
((this isn't really that intersting, but I have 10 minutes before my group meeting starts and I kinda would like a reference for myself))
Comparison:

First attempt at right, more subtle shading and less harsh shadows on the left (new materials) Also difference in lamp reflection and shadows

Fixed the way too harsh shadow on the back:
A third attempt at getting a sobel edge to work. Doesn't look different here but I can adjust it a ton more than the other one.

That being said I need to figure out in what way I need to tweak it to get that harsh black shape/line halfway through the screen to go away ahhhhh.
Probably coming back to this after my meeting so may have more updates later tonight.
