The proof - the giant pillars once supporting the bridge: as we can see in the era of TP they're ALL broken, and pillars like those can break up only in certain circumstances - like if there isn't' enough solid ground supporting them. Even the pillars of the GBofH couldn't reach the bottom of the lake, at a certain point.
