Remix of the week: Pachelbel's Ganon, Dual Storm
Due to boredom, an appreciation of certain pieces of video game music, a desire to get some worthwhile posts in this section, and... uh, boredom, I've decided to start up a new weekly thing. And this one should be easy enough for me to actually update on time, heh.
I would just update my enormous remix list, but my collection has more than doubled, and I'd prefer to give the spotlight to the best pieces of music anyways. Hard to do with a list that spans twelve pages. Hopefully I'll manage to keep a nice variety of musical styles and games through here, but it WILL be subject to my own whims and tastes, so I can't promise anything ![]() --------------------------------- Pachelbel's Ganon, remixed by Djpretzel, webmaster of Overclocked Remix I love this piece of music, and have for quite some time now. It's unique, as far as remixes go. It mixes up Zelda's Lullaby and Hyrule Field, from Ocarina of Time, with Pachelbel's Canon, of all things. The remix is very smooth and laidback, even seems a bit warm, if that makes sense. Not in the sense that jazz music is often described as laidback, either. It has some electric piano, guitar, cello, and a calliope for it's main instruments... though I never tend to pay much attention to individual instruments. The music is often so much greater than the sum of it's individual parts, and I prefer to just sit back and listen to the sound. In terms of actual quality, this remix is one of the best. I don't know or care whether actual instruments were used, and I couldn't tell from listening to it. I doubt real instruments were used, since.. that's quite the odd assortment there, heh. Either way, the music is beautifully done, with no noticable technical glitches or anything of the sort. This music is great to listen to in the car, with the windows pulled down and the music turned out real loud, especially if it's a nice sunny summer afternoon on the hilly backroads of New Hampshire. I can personally attest to this ![]() And I've shown this remix to a few unsuspecting people... they enjoyed it, and when I told them that it was video game music, they didn't believe me at first. Thought it was professionally done, and not some fan-made niche piece. Highly reccomended. Not just to fans of Zelda, or fans of video game music. I'd say that you need to listen to this if you have any appreciation of music at all. --------------------------------- Tsukasa's Pick: Dual Storm, collaborative remix between BrainCells and CarboHydroM For my first review, I was thinking of posting my thoughts and impressions of a more serene and mellow piece, but Dual Storm, a guitar medley of songs from Thunder Force III, is more than deserving of the first review. Within the first five days after downloading this remix, I had listened to it 200+ times, far more than any other song I've ever listened to in such a short timeframe. And to be honest, I'm still not tired of it. Dual Storm has yet to get old - it's that good. What this mix accomplishes is seamless transition and cooperation between a French punk-rocker and a Brazilian metal guitarist working together from thousands of miles away. Unlike most remixes that are collabs, they didn't divide up the work into halves - you can hear the switch between Carbo's crunchy guitar and BrainCells' wailing axe all throughout the song. The sheer quality of their cooperation and playing is astounding and everything they did flows together remarkably well. It's a very energetic mix, something you'd want to listen to when you just feel like rockin' out. It's an ideal song for blasting on your stereo speakers. Heck, I'm doing that now. ![]() In short, this mix is pure gold. These two were able to take live guitar recordings, add them to what is probably the best drum synth I've ever heard, and create an action-packed mix that anyone can enjoy. I've never even heard of the game, and I loved this piece to death. Even both of my parents, who could generally care less about games or the music from them, thought this piece was excellent and sounded as though done by professionals. They were even more surprised to find out that this was done by two guys half a world away from each other. Highly recommended mix for anyone who likes a kick-ass guitar arrangement or anyone who enjoys good music in general. If you haven't heard it, you're missing out - I can assure you. ![]() |

Re: Remix of the week: Pachelbel's Ganon, Dual Storm
The sound isn't working on my computer right now, but you make it sound good. Um... I get sick of listening to game music exactly the same but with different instruments... my sister (who hates Zelda for some reason) tells me, "Turn that Zelda $*** off!!!" when I play most Zelda fan music on my computer. How annoying. Basically, what I'm trying to say here is, I'd like to hear ORIGINAL remixes and fan music. Something that had a little effort put into it. I'll try to fix my speakers a.s.a.p. and then I'll post my comments and rating.

Gotta love that song. It's possibly the best Zelda remix I know, but then again, I haven't heard many. I like to keep video game music in video games.
But it's a great piece o' music, anyway.

I'll be updating with lord-of-shadow every week, just so you all know. Feel free to comment on my pick/review and whatnot.
![]() And to comment on l-o-s' pick - it's simply gorgeous. Wonderfully creative on djpretzel's part, incorporating a non-game song into his remix. I adore where it picks up after 1:30 - whichever instrument that is, it's beautiful.

Re: Remix of the week: Pachelbel's Ganon, Dual Storm
Ah, good old Dual Storm. It's been awhile since I've listened to that one. I love how the two remixers collaborated like that.
I've never been a particularly big fan of the mix, to be honest. Most of the song is fantastic, but it has a loud, repetitive drums that go throughout the entire song, overpowering the rest of it. Of course, the drums are supposed to be like that - maybe I just don't like the genre as much. |

Re: Remix of the week: Pachelbel's Ganon, Dual Storm
You guys have great taste in music. I got the old Remix thread saved as one of my favorites actually. Some great stuff.
The first one was nice and relaxing. While the second had an upbeat style to, the artists did a great job on that one. I was completely amazed to find out that they did that from halfway across the world, such a great song for such a great feat. One problem with the second one though, like you said, the drums were way to overpowering. Still good though.
