Need help with writing.

Could someone who writes fanfiction (or any fiction for that matter) give me some tips. None of my stories seem to get very far. The farthest I've gotten was about two pages. That was my first story, which I now consider to be horrible.

No, it was only on my computer and I deleted it. It wasn't fanfiction, just an original story of mine. It may have been written well, but alot of the ideas and concepts in it were dumb.

Well, I havn't actually posted any on my stories on ZU, but I find that a good plan helps a lot. Decide the basic structure of your story, then pad it out with events that lead from one point to another. Plans really are underestimated, and they help keep all your ideas together and working well.

Re: Need help with writing.

When I write my stories, I try to write about something that excites me. If you can't get excited about your own story and characters then it's probably going to crash and burn.

What makes a story good to me is having well developed characters and a good description of what is happening in the story. Good description can really add a whole new depth to your story.

I'm currently writing a story called A Kingdom Lost (which you can find in the Art and Writing forum if you're interested ^^) and I love the story so much and what I plan on happening in it that I can't stop writing. That's the kind of story you want to develop. You want something that you can really get into. If you can get into your story then so can your readers.

Re: Need help with writing.

When I write, I try to think of an original idea (even if it's fanfiction) for the story line. If you write in chapters, always read over it before you put it some where. Try to create characters that have realistic feelings, strengths and weaknesses. I hope that helps. You can pm me if you have any questions.

Re: Need help with writing.

When I write, I'll have a loose idea of what I'm writing about, and then just go from there. I don't make detailed plans, but if I'm writing something long, I'll try and figure out the general direction of where the story's going. Also, make sure to write down any ideas you get that you think you might be able to incorperate into the story later on. Another good thing to do is to reread what you're writing with fresh eyes often. Rereading something with fresh eyes means setting something aside and reading it the next day to see if you want to change something or have new ideas about this or that. I hope this helps and good luck!

Re: Need help with writing.

I tend to build up an idea in my head for a while before I write anything. If it survives for a few weeks, I might just do something with it. Keeping cliches down to a minimum can be a bit difficult sometimes, though. A good way to avoid that problem is to read something over a week after you wrote it, and decide if it was any good or not. The time delay is so you can get a fresh perspective on it. And some better ideas.

'twould help if we could see some of your work, though - then, we'd be able to comment on it.
