Personally, I don't think that the Hero's Shade is the Hero of Time, but rather some other, unknown Link who appeared between OoT and TP who might have failed and/or died on his mission. Either that, or he was a close friend or ally of this possibly forgotten Link.

I don't have any evidence to back my claims, but it's just a theory that I've stuck with.
