You could say it's very much so like that. The "red ring" as you so called it is refered to as the Power Ring, and the "blue ring" is the Armor Ring. Power Ring increased your strenght, as well as your damage taken hits. Armor Ring just lower your damage taken points.
And when it comes to the Green Ring, it does indeed make a great combination of the two. This is what ZU had to say about it:

This is the best "well rounded" ring I would have to say. It doesn't have any negative side-effects.
