Exactly, and this is why targeting exists. As Zeldablue777 said, if you could accurately attack enemies (complex enemies) in 3D space, there wouldn't be any need for a targeting system.
So... what is the point of having a targeting system on a 2D game with a decent overview of the surrounding area? It would be better if they actually developed a better 2D fighting system that doesn't require any manual targeting.
You mentioned DS and I assume we're talking a true 2D game, not the pseudo-2D Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, which are in fact
3D.
