It is my favorite FF as well. (closely followed by X and VIII)
The game featured tons of character development, and I loved the setting. For some characters though, after a certain point of the story, their development came to a halt. The only thing I didn't like about it was how the Crystal just kinda popped out of nowhere at the end. I liked the little events that went on in towns by pressing Select. How the characters split up in towns was almost like the PAs in the Star Ocean series, but better IMO. IX had a nice balance of sidequests, many of which were availible early on in the game. The fan service referances from the SNES FFs was nice too. I didn't even realize many of them until I read a Faq on them.
FF didn't need to get back to their roots, but IX did in an awsome way.
