To be fair. It wasn't just hype that ruined
TP.
TP IS a good game. But it really isn't anything special. Wind Waker took the series in a drastic new direction, spicing things up with oceans and boats and cel shading. Like it or not, it made a bigger impact.
OOT made a big impact by being the first 3D zelda. And
ALTTP made a big impact by getting so much right that every zelda copies much of it's formula to this day.
Anyway. My point is just that
TP really didn't do anything to change the series up or draw attention from a video gaming, technological standpoint. It was just another adventure game with sub-par (for the time) graphics... although good for the GC, but it was pretty much already a dead system by that point.
The game didn't really, from a gameplay standpoint, give you anything new to do really. It was a bigger Zelda, but it wasn't necessarily anything special. A good game. But not a great one.
And that's why I think it failed for the most part. The next one, I don't expect much from either. I expect similar results. I hope for something better though.
With this Spirit Tracks direction they're going in and the current state of Nintendo in general... and considering the Wii hardware and gimmicky motion controls. I don't really know if the next Zelda will truly be... innovative. Or not.
