I've played it, yes, and I find the mode of play as generally monotonous as Brawl if you let yourself play against people for about an hour. There are more things than removed tripping and added hitstun. Some of the characters actually have slower and faster attack speeds (read, Ivy's side-b comes out more quickly while some of Luigi's aerials aren't instantly chainable). Edgegaurding is a little easier due to the loss of the "magnetic ledge" thing, and everyone and their dog auto-cancels everything. Some of the stages are more "balanced"; Luigi's Mansion is now mansion-less, and Pokemon Stadium 2 has no transformations.
Whoever noted it being more similar to Smash 64 rather than Melee would be pretty close, given the ridiculous windows/length of hitstun given for being hit by pretty much anything.
