It's basically an attempt by the Brawl+ guys to fix Brawl, and make it more competitive. They took out tripping, they added hitstun, they eliminated the dumb infinites, etc.
It's different monster than Brawl, and it's actually more similar to Smash 64 than Melee due to the way hitstun and combos work. However, there is still DI, so it's not as broke as 64 was.

True, and the fact that there are so many more characters and stages than 64 make it probably the best smash experience I've had. Melee comes close though.
