Animal Collective inspires a lot of hate and usually brings up arguments about the value of experimental/ambient music, but I think they generally have a good enough sense of pop and respect for the listener to strike a good balance. Their only major mistake was
Campfire Songs in my opinion. Although
Danse Manatee wasn't great either, possibly worse, but I think it gets too much ****.
I don't know if you've listened to
Person Pitch, Panda Bear's 2007 solo album (his third I think), but that's also a favorite of mine.
Also, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's eponymous debut is pretty good too. Reminds me of
Architecture & Morality, which is probably my favorite 80's synth albums and definitely OMD's best. If I ever make a movie, I want to have a scene with someone lip-syncing Joan of Arc. I love that single for some reason, his voice is just the right mix of uncomfortably off-key and passionate.
