The Art Institute always seemed like a rip to me. I went there to check out the school in Dallas...wasn't impressed. it's right up there with Devry in my book - I kinda get the vibe that those sort of tech schools are more for people that can't do the real college thing. it's not the best way of going about these things.
what branch of game design do you want to go into? if you're looking at graphic arts and animation, whatnot...I may suggest getting an associate of arts at a community college that offers a program in graphic design (many of them have programs for specializing in game graphics), and branch off to a college for specialization after that. you could actually probably do something of the sort no matter what branch you go into, but I don't know as much about the rest of them.
but anyway, as long as your credits will transfer wherever you want to go to college...you'll need to get the basics (so long as you don't go to one of those crappy tech schools), might as well get the basics out of the way at a cheaper school.
