Exactly why would the official players' guide not be considered canon if it was made by Nintendo?

Also, if the Player's Guide on ALttP was trying to explain the LoZ/AoL storylines with those images, wouldn't they retcon the older pictures from the games? It seems to me they were trying to hint more insight on things than what the ALttP Box did or what the older LoZ/AoL manuals were limited too before.
