I may be getting a bit too literal, and to be honest, I think I'm missing some of the main concepts of this entire thread, but...xD

I always figured the Sages had a hand in putting him in the seven-year sleep. Perhaps the Goddesses had told them a legend about a seventeen year-old hero, so when ten year-old Link came along, they realized they had to...make him older?
I may not be making much sense, but that's what I always got out of the dialogue between Rauru and Link. I can't think of any reasons, other than superficial ones, why Link's soul was frozen for seven years.
