I'm fighting the urge to re-write that little segment right now, Selah. There are so many ways to do that better. Then again, I guess that was the point.

But no, I don't think "said" is a word that vanishes easily. I notice, anyway. Besides, there's a lot of other words you can use, and they're usually more informative as well. "Said" doesn't help much with the mental picture - it's too neutral.
