Perhaps, much like the fact that only one "worthy of the title hero of time" can pull the master sword, only one "worthy" of being indwelt by Ganon can wield the Trident.

I think the trident of power is only one worthy of it's power, by standereds of lust for power. and the "worthy of the title hero of time" is some one with the courage to use it, and that any non-link person that was still as full of courage could use the master sword
