It's because he has three levels of armour. Lv.1 you have seince the beggining, it is green, and nothing about it is special. Lv.2 you get in Level 5, it is yellow, and it cut's the damage you take. Lv.3 you find in Level 9, it is red, and it cut's the damage you take to 1/4th! Very usefull. Pluss, they make Link look awsome. it would get boring with that same tunic the whole game. =)

But yeah, aLttP is a must buy; the most classic of the Zelda games (Better them OoT, IMO), very long, in-depth, and it introduced tons of stuff that became staples of the series (Heart Peices, Master Sword, Fire and Ice rods, the complete Triforce, the Mirror Sheild and the Hookshot, just to name a few).
