Well, I think this is because a lot of people believe the extremists are the only ones following their religion correctly. Also your example is with a nation, not a religion. But this is an entirely different debate for another time and place.
Besides, I'm sure with that little statement trailing off at the end, he was joking. At least, I think he was.
