Lots of people tend to gather their gems in one or a couple of spots. If it gets to the point where they have more gems than me, I let them take as many as possible. Because, once most of the gems are close enough, that item appears which scatters the gems all over the map. Then I just throw my opponents gems in my base, or a safe zone.
