Shadows of Mourn (Puck, Altamira, insaney)

OoC: Hope this is easy to follow. I tend to over simplify or over complicate. Figured I'd go ahead and post it.

“You said you would come back, but you never did. Why?” This voice kept echoing in Dybia’s head, “You left us behind, your own family!”

“Of all the memories I wish I could suppress. That would be one of them,” He said to himself, trying to shut out the echoing voice of his mother, but Strangely she had never said that. It was just what he thought she would say if he returned. “Gotta remember, it’s been a while, she’s gone now. There’s no way she could still be here.” He said walking down the road to his hometown . It was a small city with many mining tunnels out on the north side.

Dybia did his best most of the time to repress his memories of the town, but being so close to it he couldn’t help but remember when he lived here. Working in the mines with his father, listening to his mother’s stories, and playing with his younger brother, they were all memories tainted by what had happened in the town shortly before Dybia left it. One day the tunnels suddenly filled with thick gasses so quickly almost none were able to get out in time. No one knew exactly what caused it but it never dissipated so it was not safe to try to go in to figure it out.

“Here it is, the city of Mourn, I still don’t understand why he told me to come here.” Dybia said, staring out into the distance at a small city. It was at least 10pm so Dybia could see the city’s lights well. He kept walking down the edge of this road being passed by a car or truck every so often.

“I don’t remember there ever being this much traffic even back in the town’s boom days. What could they be doing here?” Said Dybia a little confused, “Oh, now I see.” He said looking a lit sign that said there was a lake formed nearby by a crater caused by a meteor that struck just close enough, and just far enough away. “I guess things happen in 30 years.” It looked like quite the tourist attraction. From the sign it looked like it happened a scant 10 years after Dybia had left.

Dybia kept walking until he finally got into town. Dybia was suddenly struck with pain in his head, he felt a message coming. It felt somewhat like he was having a stroke, but this was a pain so bad a person who had had a stroke wouldn’t recognize this.

"Ah, so you've finally made it." said an enigmatic voice that was blurry sounding at first, "I was wondering when you were going to arrive."

"Why did you tell me to come here of all places?!" Said Dybia starting to shake off the pain.

"Ah, well this place around you, it’s covered in shadows unseen." Said the god, "It cloaks its great power over this place with the memories of it's past, held by it's citizens."

"And that brings me here why?" Asked Dybia a little impatiently, "I left this place long ago."

"Strangely yes, because even then it was here. Odd that you were able to leave it as you did. Most of these people are just revisiting this place. It holds onto even stranger’s memories. Memories that don’t even involve this place. It compels them to come here and sustain it. This place is a consuming shadow.” Said the unnamed god, “Although you left, this place still holds power over you, whether you think it or not. A small leech on your mind and your power, no matter how you try to suppress it.”

“Hm, seems like a good enough reason to send me here, I’d have thought you would notice something like this sooner.” Dybia said.

“Well, not many people are qualified to deal with a problem like this darkness. Including you, but knowing humans, more will gather to get rid of it. But I don’t think you should directly pursue that, at least for now. You are different than most. This place may use your memories to leech off you but you can do the same with others that come here.” Said Dybia’s god, “That’s why I didn’t tell you sooner. I’ve known about this for quite a while. You can probably handle what you encounter here now though.”

“What are you talking about? What I’ll encounter?” Dybia asked looking strange to passers by on the street staring into space talking in his head to his god.

“Even though this place doesn’t affect you like other people, your sense will be clouded, it will know your intensions. It will use other people here to defend itself. They won’t know the real reason they’re attacking you, but the town will mess with their heads. Turn their memories around to trick them.” The god stopped for a moment to let Dybia think about this, “but you can wake them up. Breaking it’s connections with such people will weaken it. Let you attack it eventually. Maybe even make you stronger for the experience.”

“Hm, So tell me, What’s doing this to my hometown? How do you know so much about this?” Dybia asked remembering all of the details his god just gave him.

“I’ve been around longer than you could imagine, so I’ve seen a few things like this before. From where I am, I can see quite a lot.” The god said giving no real indication of who he really was.

“Well guess I should get down to things, so what should I do first?” Dybia said.

“Nowhere specific. The town will respond to you. I guess you can just revisit places you remember in your hometown.” He told Dybia.

“Ok, but this place seems much bigger than it used to. I guess I’ll get a new ride. Walking here wasn’t exactly the greatest experience ever.” Dybia said as he started walking down the street hoping to find a dealership to buy a new motorcycle since his old one was recently destroyed.

“One last thing Dybia, and this is very important. No matter who this town sends after you or whatever false motivation it gives them, the only real enemy you have here is the town itself. Killing them will do nothing to the powers here.” The god said concerned but trying to keep a calm voice, “I will keep watching what happens here. I know what to watch for if you do enough damage.” The god was behind his calm voice extremely worried with another thought going through his head as he saw Dybia walking down the street, “Don‘t die on me like all the others.”

Dybia felt his head lighten as the communication stopped. The voice of a god could strain someone’s mind in telepathic contact. He walked down the street and took a few turns seeing how his hometown had gown, and seeing how little traffic there was on the roads. He finally found a slightly worn out but still good looking shop where he could get a new motorcycle. He went in for a while having to fill out a lot of paperwork for it, but came out with a new motorcycle.

Dybia rode down the street thinking more about what he had been told about the town and said to himself, “If there are enough people here with memories of this place more people like me and Atton must have come back. Don’t see why they would, but I guess that was just told why.” He stopped in front of a large building that looked like it was pretty well kept. It was the museum where they kept the meteor that formed the nearby lake. Dybia had wanted to at least take a look at it, but the museum was closed. “Guess I’ll stop by tomorrow,” He said to himself.

He began to drive off wondering what would go down in his hometown with the next couple days.
