It is a little-known fact hating on mainstream music is incredibly cool and will actually get you bonus points at the pearly gates of heaven.
That being said: I'd say most of the worst bands ever didn't even make it into the main stream, considering they probably consist of nine-year-olds who picked up mom and pop's old, untuned instrument and played in their garage for fifteen minutes without any instruction or discernable notes.
But some of the less stellar bands I can think of that have actually been in the studio and gotten some airplay would be The Click Five and Bowling for Soup. They sound exactly like every other mainstream poppunk blend there has ever been.

*NSync is really a singing group more than a band, and their acapella is occasionally amazing. Their lyrics are shallow and their following is stupid but they have some degree of vocal talent.
