My Essay

So anyway, I had to write an essay a few years back and I got a $200 scholarship for it. The prompt I chose was "Your teacher has just placed a box in the room and left."

ABYSMAL

As the box moves, rays of light start to seep through, and the box crumbles to a fine powder.
Sitting there, throbbing, a large red orb was glowing, like a compacted sphere of fire. The class,
including me, started in awe at the thing in front of the class. The thing, it started to creep forward,
leaving behind a thick line of slime. The whole class backed away, except me. I just stood there in
fear, watching its every move.
I was beginning to wonder where the teacher went. If he just dropped of the box to let go of
this monstrosity. As I was pondering, I hadn’t realized that I was in its way. I stood there, thinking
what I could do to it, and what it could do to me. I didn’t know what it was capable of, but I knew it
wouldn’t be good. It stopped, and levitated itself to my chest height. The object morphed, slowly. The
orb shifted and the ground started to rumble. Others opened the door to escape but when they looked
outside, the door shut immediately. They didn’t see anything in the halls that was rumbling. It was
like it only happened here, in this room.
The orb now had some kind of hard surface surrounding it. The thing looked like a body, a warrior of
a sort. It was kneeling, and I could see the orb, a heart. It got up and towered over me, bits and pieces
of the “armor” chipping and falling, as if it hadn’t moved in centuries. It lunged toward me, attacking!
I dodged its attack and thought to myself why it was doing this, and where the teacher was. I found a
metal rod just laying there, I picked it up and started for the warrior. I attacked, and found my effort
to be futile. A force was surrounding me. I looked back and saw the class just standing there, doing
nothing, nothing from fear I suppose.
I struck! Breaking away at part of its shell. This went on for a while, then, I struck its heart,
making it collapse. It broke apart, oozed away and dissolved. The teacher came back, holding one arm
and limping. He staggered, and softly moaned, “Good job, you passed.”
