Regardless, if you are going to discount shows due to pointlessly depressing moments, I'd advise you to stay as far away from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or Full Metal Alchemist) as you possibly can.

NGE is a love/hate thing with me. It's top 5 material. But, I once wrote about it: "If you're feeling suicidal, but don't have the resolve to follow through, watch this and you'll be set." Or something like that.
Air takes that to a whole nother level. I like a good dramatic tear-jerker every once in a while, but Air was just
disgusting. It went to over-the-top lengths to stir tears, and while succesful, it just felt too much like a pity-party.
