Air - This anime boasts strong character development, a deep and multi-layered storyline, and solid animation made possible by the legendary Kyoto Animation Studios. Normally, any show with such credentials would have me shouting its praises to anyone..

Not so with Air. This is the most depressing show I've ever seen. The show is absolutely shameless in its endevours to tug at your heartstrings. Absolutely Shameless. Trust me, it gets a lot worse than that.
I've heard very good things about Air, mostly that it's a nice, sweet, slow show that tugs on your heart-strings.

Regardless, if you are going to discount shows due to pointlessly depressing moments, I'd advise you to stay as far away from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or Full Metal Alchemist) as you possibly can.

I've only seen a handful of the first episodes, and those I quite liked.

Then again, I seem to have a 'tin ear', of sorts, when it comes to characters, I can never tell if they're developed or not. (It sounds stupid, but in many way's it's true. I can get emotionally attached to a character with the depth of an unambitious puddle.)

Well, the point of those shows is rather like the point of open-ended shows over here. Overarching plot isn't important, character development is shelved. Instead, the purpose is to keep giving people more of the same, since they obviously like it.

Gantz sucks. The whole series is far too violent and sexually-driven. As far as I've stood to watch, there was rarely any character development, and the writing was none too spectacular either.
I've never seen it, but my impression was that that was the point of Gantz. And Berserk, for that matter.

I tend to watch anime that's been "filtered", as in, a friend sees it first and recommends it. So I don't have much really to say.

The only series I've seen that I didn't really care for was Fruits Basket, but I know that many people adore it, so I'm just going to assume that it just wasn't my thing, rather than being a bad show.
