Well I'd always assumed you started out as 'nobody' if you will, with no parents who suddenly found himself in a wild adventure, because that's how Shigeru Miyamoto viewed his life. The games are supposed to let the player feel the same joy he felt when exploring the caves, rivers, and forests where he lived. While you may not need to have such humble beginning, I think it adds to the feel of the game.
