Re: Between Darkness and Light (Altamira)
He thinks he's fast, eh? He might have outrun demons from hell and rushing torrents of water and the gods only know what else--but he's never had to outrun the old ladies selling bread on the street corners in Rubato after pilfering one of their rolls; and so he's just about to see what speed is.
Granted, I'd never fought anyone with a technique like his before, but that wasn't important. Seen it once, commit it to memory, you're good. No one's ever had to hit me with anything more than once for me to get the lesson--more than a few people can attest to that.
I skidded a ways down the street, with Zorlo barreling down towards me again. I stepped to the side a second before he reached me, sticking out a leg to clothesline him, but he leapt over it. He didn't, however, leap over the elbow that followed blindingly-fast, catching him in the temple. All that speed, and all that force, focused on one, sharp point (being thin pays off sometimes) drilled into his head and knocked him down. He wouldn't stay down for very long though, I knew, so I took a breath and plunged into a sprint that tore through the sound barrier and far beyond within the first few strides.
Debris and magic and wind whipped up behind me as I shot through the streets. Zorlo, back on his feet now, tried to track my path with whatever methods he could, but it proved almost useless. Without even coming close to the speed I normally used for it or intending to create it, a ring of lesser Gloom Tornadoes was forming, tearing through the room as I dashed around the perimeter; the fencer braced himself, ready to take on the magic attacks however he could.
