...No, you're poorly misinformed on that. Anime isn't just a style of animation but English definition, it is also, indeed, by popular belief, a word used for Japanese animation here in the States. Although it's also defined as a style nowadays, you still wouldn't call, say, Avatar: The Last Airbender an anime, even though it's anime-styled.
In Japan, the word is just used for animation in general, any cartoon. Doesn't matter if it's a Disney movie, to Tom and Jerry, to Dragon Ball Z. In Japan you call animation "anime" period.
