Looking at everyone elses, they seem to just cut and paste images onto a background and add a few effects.
So far in my sigs i have tried to avoid this. I have done my best to draw from scratch with the mouse, which is really tricky i think.
Should i just start copying art work and adding effects or what? I think its kind of cheating but it doesn't seem to be working my way.

Um, they don't always cut and paste. If you want to learn more stuff I'd try tutorials. Get them here on the forums or look on Deviantart.com. They helped me grow as a sig maker.
Effects aren't cheating. They just enhance your sig. Brushes, filters, and the pen tool are good things to practice with. You can't just slap a brush on there and call it good, it takes time and patience to get it to look good, give the sig depth and flow. Just always make sure you have at least 1 focal point. Whether it be lighting or the character.
