Incorrect. We are over there because Saddam had worn out his use, and Iraq both proved to be the perfect stage to showcase the new neocon foreign policy on nationbuilding - a pipedream - and the last ditch effort of America to secure the only true untapped oil reserves in the Middle East and prolong the effects peak oil is having on our economy.
Extremists? Saddam was perhaps one of the only real powers in the region that kept extremism in its place aside from Jordan, Egypt, and Israel. At the same time, they were the only thing keeping Iran at bay from expanding its growing sphere of influence.
We're there to keep "them" from launching attacks over here? Technically yes. We, in a completely unrelated war, present to the Islamic extremist movements the world over a juicy target. So they no longer care about attacking us here.
They're already doing it really easily from over there.
