Anime has much more mature content. Awesome fighting, ocasional blood and gore (depends what your watching) actual plot, most american cartoons plots don't carry over from episode to episode, making the plots short, simplistic, and very un-in depth. Anime almost always carries the story over from episode to episode, so the plot is deeper, and more plot twists can acur.

One other thing I have always dis-liked is how cartoons lack adult language. I'm not saying little timmy turner should say the F word, or he should curse alot. Just that, If you got shot by a lazer and your arm was smoking and an ugly alien (mark) shot it at you, you wouldn't say "owch!" you would say "damn you!" or something like that. Also, its terrible when You hear adults stub their toe and yell "oh crud!" or "dangit!" when in real life, most adults would say "crap! that hurts!" or "damn that hurt!". anyway, I like how anime has more realistic art and has more mature themes.
This goes along with my belief that American cartoons are about comedy, more than action and story. Shows like Fairly Odd Parents and Ed, Edd, and Eddy are just supposed to make you laugh. Even older one like all the Loony Toons. There isn't supposed to be much story, just comedy.

So I guess it's better to ask what you like your cartoons to have: action or comedy oriented.

thats completely untrue. Anime is hand drawn by the artists. for instance, masashi kishimoto draws the manga for naruto. Then, he has his animation team use do things like shading and textures. the artists usually just does alot of rough sketchs. Masashi Kishimoto directs the anime, he dosn't draw every single cell indevidually by hand, that would take a lifetime. They use computers at the end of to add the color and to crop the images so they fit on your TV screen.

Computer animation is when there is no drawing involved. most computer animators use software to great computer generated images, large studios like pixar do this. They also use clay models to sculpt what the characters will look like. This method uses little to no Hand drawing except possibly concept art. Everything you see on your screen is completely rendered by a computer. Its a completely different style of animation
I can tell the difference between computer animated and cartoons. Anyone who watched both types of animations should be able to tell just by looking.

Come to think of it, I can't give a quick answer on how I coul tell, should anyone ask. I just can.

Edit: Actually, The Alladin series was a Disney cartoon series with cintinuity, and a nice blend of action and comedy. So my belief doesn't fit everything.
