I had a similar problem, but I didn't do what I should've done (still not sure what that was)

I saw the girl in year 10, and liked her immediatly. On Valentine's Day of the next year I put a 'secret admirer' note in her locker, intending to tell her a bit later... on the 18th of May I told her, only to find out she had known since March! I tried to talk to her whenever I could, which was not very often due to my shyness, but at the end of the year, I found out that she already had a boyfriend. Nuts.
