Kai Awai

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Zelda related terms, storylines, characters, races, or ideas.

Name: Kai Anei Awai (k-EYE ah-NAY ah-WHY)
Title: Child of the Wood
Age: 21
Race: Elf (half Hylian, half Sheikah)
Sex: Male
Hair: Brown (Sample)
Eyes: Black (Example)
Height: 6' 4" (193 cm)
Weight: 200 lbs (90.7 kg)

Appearance:
Head – Kai has a long face, lacking in fat, thus the bone structure of it is shown rather handsomely. From the side, one can view the long slope of his jaw line. He has a long but slender chin, being more pointed and rounded at the end—not broad or wide. His lower jawbone is angled high from his chin. The upward slant is about 30-45 degrees that the sides of his lower jawbone make. This lower portion of his face makes the entire face long but heart-shaped. It’s attractive, for his face is not excessively long. His chin does not extend extremely far from his mouth. His forehead is rounded. From a frontal view, his face is long, heart-shaped, but not noticeably wide. His nose is long as well to fit the structure of his face, but narrow—not wide. He has somewhat high cheekbones, but not noticeably so. He has thin but long lips. They are somewhat serious, since he doesn’t seem to move them into expressions very often.

Kai has long but narrow eyes. (I imagine my characters anime-ish, so that might help with the eyes.) They never seem to be greatly exposed, nor does it seem possible for them to be very big or wide. His upper eyelids seem slightly heavy, which makes them more narrow than common. His irises are completely black. This makes his eyes slightly shocking because one can’t determine where his pupils are, since his irises are exactly the same shade of black. His eyebrows are long to match his eyes, and are very thin and slender. They’re close to his eyes, aiding in his often serious expression.

The color of his hair is a dark chocolate brown. It has an extremely light tint of auburn. The brown in his hair is so dark that for the auburn to be noticed the light must catch his hair. His hair is very fine, thin and silky. He has straight hair but with enough volume and curl to make it pour elegantly off his scalp. It’s split evenly down the middle. His bangs are parted to the sides of his face, though they often fall in his eyes. His bangs reach past his eyes but stop just above his cheek bones. His hair is short, but layered to a point at the back of his neck, just at his shoulder level.

His ears are pointed for he is Hylian and Sheikah; both have pointed ears, like most elves. His earlobes are attached, which is very common for the elf types. Both lobes are pierced with a little silver hoop for each one.

Body – Kai is tall for his race. He has an average body type, somewhere between lean and muscular. He leans toward the muscular side more. He has low body fat so his muscles are finely chiseled and defined. He has strong legs, so his thighs and calves have a very fine definition to them. His skin tone is on the fair side, pale and less peachy-toned. It comes from his Sheikah blood. Kai may have battles scars scattered over his body in some places, but not a lot and not very big ones. His light skin creates a beautiful contrast to his dark eyes and hair. Kai looks older than he is, for he matured more quickly than other males. This is true for body and mind. Some may be able to spot the wisdom in his eyes. He looks 24-5-ish.

Kai has a tattoo on the right side of his neck (his left). It appears as shown here. It is large enough to reach before his jaw and collar bone.

Clothing – Kai’s outfit changes like any normal person’s. If so, it will be indicated. Though, he has a set attire for travel and possible battles. Kai wears a tight-fitting navy blue shirt, sleeveless. It’s made of an elastic material to fit many sizes. It reveals almost every defined and toned muscle and tendon of his torso. The collar of his neck is circular and covers his clavicles, but not reaching up his neck. He has midnight blue shorts made of wool. They’re long, reaching down to his knees and loose-fitting toward the bottom. The wool is very stiff and sturdy. They do not bend easily to his figure. The ends of them are somewhat torn and tattered. He has a white strip of cloth wrapped around them to hold it to his waist, about two inches wide. It is wrapped around him three times. The edge is even around his waist, sticking out about two inches from his wrap, though wrinkled by the tie around his waist. On his wrap many pouches are tied to his waist, holding herbs, roots, food, and other things of the sort. His shirt is tucked into his shorts. He has a strip of white cloth, about two inches wide wrapped around the lower part of his torso, seen rising up from his shorts for about five or six inches up his abdomen.

His feet and forelegs are covered by metal boots. The steel is a very light silver-blue. The metal is light, ideal for swiftness and agility. The boots are tight-fitting, not huge and hulking. They reach all the way up his calves, stopping before his knee-pit at the backs of his legs. The front curves up around his knee-caps. The knee-caps are a separate piece of armor, but attached to the foreleg parts by hinges and elastic straps so that they bend and move with his knees. They’re flexible and well oiled so that Kai may move swiftly with them. It is difficult to see much of Kai’s legs because they are well covered by his long boots and shorts. He wears black elastic-cotton socks underneath. They’re long, reaching up his forelegs to make his boots comfortable for him. He has boxer-like underwear, black, made of soft cotton, reaching half way down his thighs and well covered by his wool shorts.

He wears a heavy black coat made of soft cotton. Its sleeves reach down loosely to his elbows. The bottom reaches down to the backs of his knees. It has a large hood for him to pull over his head if needed, but most of the time he keeps it pulled back. It has no buttons or anyway for it to be held shut. He wears a scarf made out of the same material, wrapped around his neck, but it sags around the upper parts of his shoulders and covering his collar bone. He uses this to wrap over his face if needed, but like the hood, he keeps it down for most of the time. On the inside of his cloak, are leather holsters made for an array of needle-like darts. There are two leather pads with elastic straps holding them in place, one for each side of his coat.

On his forearms, he has the white strip of cloth, two inches wide, wrapped around his forearm. It is wrapped up to his elbows and covering his hands, past the first knuckles but stopping before the second and covering the majority of his thumb. Kai has light gauntlets made out of the same silver-blue steel as his boots. They do not cover his whole arm. They guard the tops, strapped on by black elastic material with small little black buckles. His gauntlets reach ¾ of the way up his forearm. On his hands, they’re formed to guard his knuckles and do not go past them. On the backs of them, on his hands, is the Eye of Truth is carved into it and painted scarlet. There is one on each hand.

Kai wears a necklace made of black hematite beads. The pendant is made of hematite and in the form of an “X” shape. It reaches past his collar bone and to his sternum. It is usually covered by his scarf.

Weapon:
Ashi – A katana. The blade is two and a half feet long and one and a half inches wide. The hilt is seven inches long. The hilt is a combination of dark purple and blue colors over-lapping each other, and it is made of many colored threads woven into the hilt. On the end of the handle is a red tassel. Carved in with the same crimson red is an eye with a teardrop coming from it at the base of the blade next to the hilt: the Eye of Truth. Wrapped around the hilt is a silver chain that has a silver pendent of the Eye of Truth, the tear drop of the pendent holds a red gem. It was enchanted to resist breaking and extreme temperatures. It can cancel out shadow magic. It is tied to the wrap around his waist with a strap, on his left side.

Darts – Kai sometimes uses long needle-like darts. When he was living in the forest he used to make these out of a very dense wood. Now that he’s lived in Hyrule castle, he made some fashioned out of metal. They vary in size, so that he can know which kind of dart he is using. He knows them by touch more than by sight. They have different oils in their hollowed-out insides and on their sharp tips. His large darts are six inches long and a half a centimeter wide. His medium darts are four and a half inches long and less than half a centimeter wide. His small darts are three inches long and thinner than his medium darts. They have no feathers on their ends. Kai can throw these at blurring speeds with just a flick of his wrist. He keeps them inside his coat.
  • Blank Dart – This dart does not have a hollowed out center. It’s Kai’s largest dart. It does not have any oil substances on or in it. Its purpose is to puncture vital areas, it being larger than any of the others. It is slower because it is heavier. He carries twenty of these.
  • Sleep Dart – This is Kai’s medium dart. This has a hollow center filled with an oily substance that Kai made from an herb. It is a very quick sleeping dose. It can knock out the average humanoid in five seconds. It may take longer for different races, depending on their resistance to such drugs. Larger beings may take longer and even require more darts to knock them out effectively. His dart is smaller and lighter than his blank darts. He often needs them to be quicker and less noticeable than his normal darts. He carries fifteen of these.
  • Poison Dart – This is Kai’s smallest dart. It is hollow like the sleep dart. Only, the oily substance within it is an extremely deadly poison. It can kill the average humanoid in thirty seconds to a minute, sometimes longer depending on the concentration of the poison. The time varies depending on the race and their immunity toward poisons. Larger beings may require more poison darts to kill. They are the smallest and the lightest of the three. These are usually only for emergencies, but Kai often has to be his quickest during these times, so his darts are fashioned for pure speed. He carries ten of these.
Armor: Boots and gauntlets (clothing description). They are made out of a lighter steel, but then that makes them slightly weaker and easier to bend and dent. They are fashioned for speed, not strength.

Skills/Magic:
  • Kai is knowledgeable of many plants and herbs that aid in many uses. Some medical and some poisons and other types of drugs. He can use this knowledge to aid his own injuries and the injuries of others. Of course, this cannot be done in the midst of battle.
  • He is talented in crafting little traps for animals, but he’s clever enough to adjust this for people also. He can create many things out of just the raw materials of the forest. Should he run out of darts, he could simple make more out of a hard wood nearby.
  • Kai is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. He does not always need his sword to defend himself. He was taught in the martial arts of the Sheikah. It is a very graceful and fluid style. It often has flips and other contortions that require a nearly magical sense of balance. It seems nearly inhuman. It is more about speed and agility than strength.
  • Kai is ambidextrous, but often favors his left.
Daichi (earth/geokinesis) (Rank: VI) – Kai discovered a strangely natural ability to manipulate the earth, rock, soil, minerals, and metals in the earth around him. This includes the ability to control magnetic fields produced by certain minerals. He can make rock turn to sand and back again. The Sheikah can make it become dense and harder. He can create shields harder than diamond if he really puts a lot of energy into it. He could create diamonds with the right materials. He can make the ground shift and turn as long as it is made of some kind of stone/mineral. Kai can make bits of earth levitate and hover around him to hurtle at his enemies. He can also command his darts without touching them, if they are made out of metal.

However, Kai is not extremely practiced with this. He’s just a beginner in geokinesis, though still very skilled and often at a higher advantage with this against most people. One could say he has great potential and raw talent with it. However, it needs refinement and toning still. Kai is just at the tip of the iceberg with this ability. His limits remain unknown.

It takes energy/mana/chi (whichever one prefers) to use this ability. Kai’s endurance is rather average at the moment. He has the potential to reach even higher levels of energy and endurance. He simply needs more practice, experience, and a good teacher to get a better handle of it. If Kai uses too much of his energy he may faint or even die depending on how much was used and how quickly.

Telepathy (Rank: VII) – This Sheikah was trained to use his mind in many ways. He can create a telepathic link with his mind to another person’s. This can be used to communicate over great distances or in secret, so that enemies cannot hear what is being said and planned. Kai can read minds as well. However, this requires a deep penetration of the mind. This is easily enough achieved, but only if the person has no experience in telepathy and controlling their mind in such ways. If the person is experienced and knows enough, they may be able to notice Kai’s presence in their mind and block it. Kai is not yet practiced enough to find memories, which is even deeper within the mind.

Energy Break (Rank: VI) – Kai can use his own energy to cancel out attacks that require some kind of magic/mana/energy/chi to perform. This includes: spells, curses, and even elemental. However, it is a delicate process. Kai must sense the amount of energy in the attack and then apply the same amount of energy. Most of the time, he must catch the attack with his hand, using his energy to cancel it out. It must be timed correctly and it must have the right amount of energy applied.

Strengths:
  • Daichi makes Kai difficult to fight because there are, nearly, always metals or stones of some sort near by. Weapons made of these are often useless against Kai because he can easily disarm them. Should Kai run out of darts or lose his sword, he can then always rely on his Daichi. Earth is naturally all around, thus, difficult to run out of. The sheer force and strength of earth is quite an amazing thing to behold. Though Kai is only a novice, some may find themselves overwhelmed by Daichi.
  • Kai is a finely skilled Sheikah, and though not complete with his training, he has enough skills to defeat the average fighter easily. More advanced warriors will find him to be quite a challenge, but not impossible. His strength is average for a man who has worked hard for the majority of his life to survive. Kai is a strong man, but nothing extremely impressive compared to other warriors. His strengths lie more in his swiftness, agility, dexterity, and grace of the Sheikahs. This aids in his ability to disappear when he wishes, seemingly as if into thin air. The Sheikah’s stealth is unrivaled even by thieves and assassins. He can stalk another as if he is part of the shadows himself—in any setting.
  • He is also very familiar with forest areas, since he grew up in one. Kai has many talents in these areas. He can create many things out of the raw materials of this natural setting: medicine, poison, other drugs, darts, weapons, shelters, food, and traps. He can hunt and track animals and even people. It would not be wise to face Kai in such a setting. Survival in the woods is an easy feat for him. He seems to thrive in natural environments such as these.
  • The Sheikah has sharp elven ears. His hearing is very advanced compared to normal beings, such as humans. He can focus on certain sounds, pick up strange and usually unnoticeable noises, and then fade out of focus as to not damage his ears should there be a sudden din. This makes it nearly impossible for others to sneak up on him. He would hear them before they even had a chance. The mix of his Sheikah training and his survival background makes a deadly combination, should his enemy face him in a forest/wood/swamp/mountain environment.
  • Kai is very sensitive to auras. This is also what makes it difficult to sneak up on him. Only those who know how to suppress or blend their auras into the existing environment may have a chance of sneaking around or upon Kai. His hearing is still in effect to make up for any undetectable by their aura. He is sharp and observant by nature anyway. It is hard to get by him unnoticed.
  • He was trained to fight in darkness and shadows. Thus, Kai does not need his eyes to fight. He does not have any special sight or enhanced vision to aid him in the dark. Kai’s training toned him to use his ears and sense and see the aura of a person in his mind’s eye. He is very accurate with this, though it may be difficult to sense weapons. If the person has used the weapon for a long time, has it near them often, or have an attachment to it for some reason, weapons often take on the energy and aura of their owners. He can sense magical attacks, since they take a type of energy to power them; they often come right from the person’s aura/chakras.
  • The Sheikah has a very controlled mind that can numb out physical pain. Kai has incredible endurance because of this. He can brush off injuries that would normally leave others disabled with pain. Thus, Kai can fight longer, surprising his enemies. This is part of what makes Kai the amazing warrior that he is—his strength against the weakness of his own body, rather than the power in his muscles. He can ignore the pain in battle for some time. He has learned to block it out when needed. It is something he prepares for.
  • Kai is good at detecting deception. It was part of his Sheikah training to learn how to tear illusions apart and discover the truth underneath. He has trained his mind to see through most illusions, spells, and false things. This can also mean spoken lies and poker faces. His telepathy is part of this, so if he has any reason to believe that a person is lying, he may take a peek at their thoughts if he can. Kai is also just good at studying and analyzing people.
Weaknesses:
  • It takes energy for Kai to use Daichi. Should he exert himself too much, Kai will grow fatigued. This affects his body as well as his mind. He will not be able to be as swift or agile. His focus will shot, unable to aim as well, dexterity damaged, or block out physical pain. The more he continues to use Daichi, the more fatigued he will become and the more his abilities and skills will be affected. He would be at his weakest. In such a state, there wouldn’t be much that could save him from his enemy. No strength, no speed, no endurance—Kai would be at his opponent’s mercy.
  • Other elemental attacks can counter his Daichi, mostly wind and water/ice. Fire does not affect his attacks. In fact, melting his earth doesn’t do much, because the other’s flame cannot control the grounding substance of the liquid earth. Kai would be on top of that matter. High speed winds have much better luck at shattering his attacks. Though, it still comes down to who has the most energy. So if the air elemental has more energy and skill than Kai, he will be at the disadvantage. Water attacks can be effective, but usually only in ice form, for it can seep into the cracks, freeze, expand, and then shatter his rocks if used fast enough and with enough skill. Again, if the water elemental has more energy and skill, Kai will be at the disadvantage.
  • Kai has average strength for a humanoid warrior. Definitely stronger than the average person, but there are definitely other warriors stronger than him. His style is more based in swiftness, agility, and deception. If caught in a moment that demands pure physical strength, it wouldn’t be uncommon for the other to win the match. The power in his muscle is not his strong point, but not his weakest point.
  • The Sheikah, though he has amazing focus, can only focus on so many things at once. He cannot use telepathy at the same time he is blocking out a large amount of pain. Though he can block out smaller pains and still use telepathy, there is a limit when he reaches a certain intensity of pain. The same with using Daichi and telepathy, and then blocking out pain—he can do all three at once, but if one demands more focus than another because of the situation, he would have to favor one over the other.
  • Though his sharp hearing is a strength, it is also a weakness. If a very loud noise were to occur while Kai is listening so intently, honing his ears, it will hurt his sensitive ears, causing him to become disarmed and stunned for a rather long time. This pain is different from physical cuts and blows. Kai cannot block out this kind of pain. It could even damage his ears permanently.
Personality: When one first meets Kai, they find his ways often cold and unfeeling. Yet at the same time mysterious and dark. It depends on the person. Kai is, nearly, always calm. The Sheikah displays an expression of utter indifference, nearly, at all times. He appears blank, emotionless, and apathetic. It is understandable that most find him cold and inhuman on the surface. The harshest would call him soulless and a man without a heart. Of course, this is only his first impression on most people.

His expression does not change often, and even when it does it usually is in very subtle ways. Such as his eyes, if Kai is to express something, most of the time it will be expressed subtly through them. Rarely will one catch his half-smile possessing the right side of his face. Kai is calm and cool under stressful situations and times of urgency. He makes a perfect leader this way, because he does not panic. He can make snap judgments, think quickly and effectively. He has had many experiences of being a leader in the past. He does not let his emotions get in the way. He has perfect control of himself. Kai is extremely disciplined. He was even before his Sheikah training. He has focus quite unlike the norm. This shows in his ability to block out the majority of physical pain. This makes Kai a man capable of many stunning feats.

However, one cannot forget that every person has their limits. Kai is only human-ish (Hylian-Sheikah humanoid). He does have emotions, even if he chooses not to show or expose them often. He has them like any other person. So like any person, his emotions can reach extreme heights of intensity. It is only during these times, in situations that would cause such a reaction in him, may Kai truly show his emotions because he will have lost his control, reaching his limit. It takes a lot to make Kai lose control like this. In the past, it has only happened when a loved one had died a brutal death.

Kai may not look it, but he is a kind and compassionate person underneath his stone-like exterior. It just takes getting to know the man to see this side of him. He does have a heart. It is capable of just as much love as anyone else’s. He can sympathize. He can hate. To him, hate is a strong word. He has never truly hated—loathed anyone. He has certainly disliked people. But hate … not yet. Kai is a man who is careful about what he says. He is extremely honest. He only says what he truly believes and feels—should he speak at all. When he says he loves someone, there is no doubt that he loves them. The same is true if he was to admit to hating another. It would be true in every way. So Kai is careful with his words.

Kai has never hated another person, because he finds it to be a pointless endeavor. He simply finds no point to hating another person. What is good about hating? Kai views hate a waste of his emotions and energy. Hate that may come with blaming other people for his pain; he also sees it as an ignorant thing to do. He sees it as giving someone power over him if he were to blame them for his losses. So he doesn’t. He sees it as an unfortunate event. Bad things happen to people. He doesn’t believe that hating someone or something for it will help him heal from a negative experience. Hating does not help him. So he doesn’t hate, or at least not yet. It would be more accurate to say that he does not hate needlessly.

This does not mean that Kai has no motivation. He does everything in his power to protect those he loves. He lets his need to keep them safe be his guide. He believes it is stronger than hate. This doesn’t stop Kai from feeling the pain and worthlessness when he fails to protect them. Kai is capable of hate. He just hasn’t had the chance to yet. Should he hate, it is not a sadistic hate. Kai is not spiteful. He’d just kill the person quickly and be over with it. No torturing. No mocking. No spite. He doesn’t see the need for it. If he must kill to keep a person from hurting other people, then he will. He will do it quickly—mercifully. Kai’s wrath is righteous. He is pure in the way that he hates.

Kai is immensely protective. Not just of his loved ones. He values life. It displeases him when he sees others killing so needlessly, wasting life. He does not like seeing others being tormented for the pleasure and enjoyment of another. Kai will come to their aid should he see this happening around him. However, he will kill to protect the innocent from being tormented and abused. Kai is careful how he kills. He will not kill every criminal who crosses his path. He may only see the need in extreme cases and emergencies. Kai never hurts another being for his own pleasure. After saving another, Kai may attend to any injuries they may have. He is kind and caring, nurturing to others when he feels they are in need of help. Kai shows his soft heart with his actions rather than words, though with a blank face. However, he will be on his way once he finishes helping them. Often without another word or even a good-bye.

In love, he is extremely loyal. Kai is definitely not a lustful man. Some may even call him picky when it comes to choosing a partner. He generally mates for life, so he is cautious when picking the right person to do this with. Once found, he is devoted, protective, he gives all of himself to that person. He is a very nurturing partner to have as well. He cares for them with all his heart. However, he is firm and assertive about his own needs and desires as well. He does not forget his own well-being in love and only know the other’s. At the moment, he is with Kira Greenthorn.

Kai is very grounded in his beliefs. He seems to have his own unspoken codes and rules by which he lives his life. He is a solid person. None can shatter his resolve. When Kai is decided on his goal, none can stop him from completing it. This does not mean he is unreasonable. He will listen to what reasons another may give him, and he may change his mind if they are, in fact, reasonable and needed. Otherwise, no one can make him do something he does not believe in or want. He is assertive, maybe even harsh, when he must be. When he believes it is vital. This makes an aura of strength radiate from him. Kai is strong, and he is stable in heart and mind. The man is rather wise, more than most his age. Thus, no one can really play with his feelings or manipulate him psychologically. Strong and grounded, he definitely is. Kai is confidence.

Some find Kai mysterious and dark, and may assume that he is complex and full of secrets. This is false. Kai is pretty simple once you get to know him. Being so honest, he does not often keep any secrets. If asked a question, he answers it to the best of his knowledge. Not that everyone will also understand his answers. Sometimes, if he feels it is needed, Kai can speak in riddles. It’s something he’s always sort of done, but it’s sharpened with his Sheikah training, however, most of the time his answers are blatantly honest—blunt. It asked a question, he will answer it to the best of his ability, unless it is personal to someone else or an important truth to keep silent. If he does not wish to talk about his personal life, he will simply tell the person so. This applies mostly to strangers. Kai would probably tell his companions anything about him if they asked.

Kai is not a talkative individual. He may only speak when it is to discuss something of importance, to collaborate with whatever group or person he may be teamed up with. He usually only speaks to inform and if he is asked a direct question. This also makes him appear cold. Kai only speaks when he feels it is important to. This can count for when he feels another may need some consoling. He will offer whatever wise words of advice he can for them. This is how Kai shows his kind and compassionate side, even if it may be with a blank face. This how Kai shows he cares, other than with his actions.

The Sheikah prefers to study people rather than talk to them to get to know the person. He studies how they interact with others and their conversations. Most of the time that is all he needs. However, if he feels it is important he will ask the person about themselves. Usually it will be about a topic the person keeps secret and, therefore, does not speak of in public or with many others for Kai to observe. He will only ask if he deems it of importance to know for others, the person, or himself. He is a master at eavesdropping. It looks as if he is not paying much attention to anyone; when in truth, he is studying everyone around him carefully. He rarely has personal conversations with people on a regular basis. He may only speak more freely with those very close to him, such as Kira.

Some may find him cold and unfeeling on the surface. This is most certainly not so. It is simply the way Kai has learned to control himself as a person. So that he may act and choose rightly. This is how Kai has disciplined himself. In his youth, it may have been out of trying not to feel anything to avoid the pain. Now it has simply grown into Kai’s behavior. Slipping into how he has learned to control his mind and heart. It has become a part of him, and he does not feel the need to change it. He is not holding himself back from feeling, for he is always feeling underneath his expressionless face. He lets himself feel. He’s not trying to hide either. The truth is that he is just a rather serious man. Thus he expresses it so.

History: (WARNING: This history contains spoilers for anyone who reads my fanfiction, Empire of Darkness. So if you don’t like spoilers, don’t read it.) *Mandrag Ganon was an alias of Ganondorf Dragmire; it means Ganon of the Enchanted Thieves*

His mother was the leader of the Sheikah, the shadow people. Her name was Akata Kage Anei. His father was a Hylian who worked as a solider in the King’s Guard of Hyrule. His name was Tarento Kei Awai. They both served the royal family of Hyrule. Both had been born and raised in Hyrule Castle Town. However, they did not meet each other until Akata’s older sister, Impa, made and governed a small village near the castle for the poor and needy. They had met in that village, but through some difficulty, managed to fall in love with each other. They married, and Akata took on the Awai name.

Then the war in Hyrule began, when the Gerudos grew hostile in the desert, with the first man born to them in a hundred years: Ganondorf Blaze Dragmire. The races of Hyrule quickly chose sides. The Zoras, the Gorons, and the Sheikah, stayed firmly by King Daphnes’ side. The Kokiri stayed oblivious in their forest, unaware of any events taking place outside of it. The Gerudos began genocide against the Sheikah, for Mandrag Ganon wished to show the races what happens to those who remain faithful to Daphnes. Akata struggled to protect her people, and Daphnes did his best to help protect them, but slowly her race was beginning to disappear as Ganondorf slaughtered and tortured them, often desecrating their bodies as further warning to the other races.

The war continued for two more years. None of the races left Daphnes’ side, despite Ganondorf’s warnings. The Sheikah were dying out. Akata became pregnant and had to stay out of battle for a while, until her son was born: Ashi Anei Awai. After another two years, Ganondorf gathered all his forces and launched a surprise attack on Hyrule Castle. Messengers were sent to find aid from the Zoras. However, the attack was brutal and all that remained of the Sheikah were killed in the assault, except for Impa, who was protecting King Daphnes’ baby girl, Zelda.

Akata forced Tarento to take two-year-old Ashi and flee the burning city. She rushed out to battle and to carry out her duty and vow to protect the royal family. She did so with the Captain of the King’s Guard, Aravin Fitad Ryxton, who became a close friend through the many battles and struggles they fought through together. They met Ganondorf on the battle field. Aravin challenged him, they fought, and he fell dead at Mandrag Ganon’s feet. Akata tried to avenge her fallen friend, but Ganondorf killed her just the same.

Tarento fled with Aravin’s wife, Fae, who was also fleeing with her own child: one-year-old Link Rein Ryxton. However, a young Gerudo General stopped them: Nabooru Rova Shahoma. Tarento told Fae to run, and he quickly hid his son in a corner so that he could turn to face the Gerudo. Nabooru wounded him gravely, but when she did, little Ashi cried out from his hiding spot to his father. The Gerudo apparently took pity on them, and told Tarento to flee quickly with his son, before more Gerudos would come to kill them. She gave him her horse to flee with as well. Tarento was too concerned with the safety of his son to object or question. So he took the Gerudo’s horse and ran from Hyrule Castle.

Tarento came to the edge of the Kokiri Forest, running from Gerudo troops that littered the fields of Hyrule. His horse would not enter the forest, so he left it at the edge and wandered in. He got lost, and he was starting to die from blood loss. He eventually collapsed, at the end of his strengths, reaching his limits. This was when Farore appeared to him, in a humanoid form. He begged her to save his son. She smiled and agreed, and so Tarento died in peace, knowing his little boy would live and be safe. Farore picked up little Ashi and took him to the Skull Kids of the Lost Woods. They called their goddess the Lady of the Wood, as often they called the Great Deku Tree, the Father of the Forest. She told them they were to protect and raise little Ashi Awai, and she left the child with them.

The war came to an end a year later. The Skull Kids renamed Ashi as Kai. The child grew, forgetting his parents, his name, and what race he was. The Skull Kids were not cruel to him, but they were not ideal parents for a child, since they are forever children themselves. They played their little tricks on each other all the time. All laugh and play. They treated Kai fairly, but they had come to call him the Child of the Wood. They believed him to be the son of the Goddess Farore. They treated him with the indifference of politeness, nearly as a prince of their kind. They taught him the only ways they knew, which were the ways of the woods. Kai grew, and he grew up alone. Even with all the Skull Kids around him, their indifference and their lack of acceptance, left him alone. Painfully aware that he was not one of them, and painfully unaware of what he was. Kai did not take much liking to the polite ways in which they treated him. What he truly wanted was the love of his parents.

Kai learned to be quick, silent, and skilled in the forest, hunting his own food, learning from the Skull Kids which plants to eat. He also learned which plants made good and powerful medicines, and which were full of death and poison. He knew how to disappear into the woods, covering his own trail. However, it was not the way of the Skull Kids to leave the Lost Woods. They don’t leave it to even socialize with the Kokiri, even though they were neighbors. Kai did not feel any need to leave it just then.

Kai struggled with his longing for love and for the company of his own race, for somewhere he truly belonged. He grew rather cold himself, trying to stamp out his need, for as he grew older, he realized that this love and acceptance was something he could never have. So he lost all hope in ever finding such a thing. He began to believe that he was meant to be alone. Not only was there no love to be found for him, there was no one for Kai to call dear to his heart. There was nothing he was attached to emotionally. Kai numbed his emotions so that he could stop feeling the need and pain for all the things he was currently denied.

The only small clue he had was a necklace his father had managed to leave around his neck before he died. It bore the Sheikah’s Eye of Truth as its pendant. A necklace Akata had given Tarento. This, Kai was certain, was proof that maybe he was not Farore’s child. The Skull Kids told him they had never seen a symbol like that before. So it was obviously not connected to the Goddess Farore.

At age fourteen, the Goddess Farore came to him again. Kai couldn’t help but be interested. She looked like a Hylian, like his race. He instantly wanted to be near her. She consoled the lonely child like a mother, giving him a sweet taste of what he yearned so much for. After this, she taught him a song on his flute that the Skull Kids gave him. It was a song that could send him back in time. After showing him this, they were taken to a different time dimension, one in which Ganondorf had gotten the Triforce of Power and took over Hyrule. She showed him the Hero of Time, Link, the child of his parents’ friends, who had also been taken in by the forest. Farore told him that Kai can’t use this song unless it is to save Link. She told him that he must protect Link, for he would of great importance to Kai and everything else someday. Kai couldn’t refuse the goddess. He swore to her that he would protect Link. Farore took him back, and he reluctantly let her leave him again.

Two years later, he found a group of Hylians fighting a group of what looked similar to Hylians. They were dark elves, with white hair and black skin. Kai was once again inclined to help the Hylians, for they bared the most resemblance to himself. He managed to kill several of the dark elves, and helped save a few injured Hylians with his knowledge of the medical value of local plants. The Hylians were grateful, but still confused and cautious around this child of the forest. Their leader asked for Kai to come back with them. So for the first time, Kai left the woods to see the rest of Kokiri Forest.

Kai came to find a large number of Hylians were hiding out in the Kokiri village. The Great Deku Tree had granted them permission to hide there. Apparently, Hyrule had been attacked by the Dark Elf Empire. They took over, and some Hylians had managed to escape being enslaved and ran to the forest for cover. The large number called themselves The Forest Rebellion. There were rumors of other rebellious groups hiding out else where in Hyrule as well, bidding their time to overthrow the empire.

At first, some of the Hylians thought Kai might’ve been some kind of demon spirit from the forest, but it was too obvious that he wasn’t anything harmful to them since he had helped them. The leader of the rebellion scoffed at this idea. However, he believed right away that Kai was a gift from the Lady of the Wood. His name was Germanin Mitsukai. He was a rather old man, perhaps in his early fifties, but he still had strength and durability left in him to continue to lead the group of rebels for a while longer. He asked Kai to stay with them. Kai could not help himself. He wanted to be around these people who looked to be his race.

Germanin asked Kai how he came to live in the forest, but Kai couldn’t remember. So this led the rebellion leader to have even more confidence that Kai came from the woods, and that he was, indeed, “the Child of the Wood,” a gift from the Goddess Farore sent to aid them against the empire. Kai didn’t deny any of it, since he rather believed Farore taught him the song for a reason, and that maybe this Link was important to this land. But sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder if he really was Farore’s child. He wanted to be, so that he could have someone he could call, “mother.” Considering the evidence given, he thought he could very well be her child, for he did not remember his parents. If it were not for the necklace he bore, he would have given into the belief fully.

However, his new home in the rebellion with the Hylians was not as wonderful as he thought it would be. Instead of feeling like he belonged to them, he was, strangely, even more alienated. The children his age found his ways strange. His ways were very different from theirs for he had grown up with the Skull Kids and their ways were of the forest. Kai was strangely quiet, nearly mute in some ways. Some of the girls in the rebellion found him attractive and often sought his attention. However, Kai was not very interested. Even though Germanin had finally told him about sex and the opposite gender, Kai did not find himself attracted to any of these girls (or any boys for that matter).

The boys of the rebellion grew jealous and soon acted upon their emotions. Tanis Tek Berkana was a leader of most of the boys their age. He was popular with them, and he didn’t like how all the girls became flustered by Kai instead of himself. So he quickly targeted the new arrival in the Rebellion. The boys tried to beat up Kai, but often found it very difficult to do so. He was faster than them from being raised in the forest. He dodged and ran from them very well, though he never laid a harmful hand to them. He did not wish to fight. Of course, they tried to tease Kai because of it, but none of it meant much to Kai. Except that he’d found that he was not accepted there either. He was an outcast once more. The girls eventually became bitter because Kai did not show interest in any of them. Tanis tried his best whenever he had the chance to make Kai’s life more difficult for him. There were, however, two Kokiri who often would shoo Tanis away. A girl named Saria and a boy named Mido. They were kind to him, and he found he respected them for it. They were his only friendly acquaintances.

The only person Kai had become close to was Germanin, for he lived with the old man. Germanin was preparing Kai to take over as the leader of the Forest Rebellion. He was getting old and he wanted to make sure the rebellion would be left in the right hands. Kai was a quiet but extremely intelligent boy. He trusted that when Kai was older he would be a suitable leader. Tanis became jealous of this as well, for he desired to be the next leader of the Rebellion.

Eventually, Kai met Cersei Alkiano. A quiet person herself, she had a very androgynous appearance. In truth, she could look stunning as either male or female. Currently, she dressed in unflattering clothing that hid her body, and the shorter cut of her hair made her look like a boy. For this, the rest of the teenagers their age bullied and alienated her as well. Tanis often found much joy in tormenting her. However, like Kai, she patiently did not fight back. She simply waited for them to bore of it or for an adult to come around. She would try to continue whatever task she was doing, ignoring them as much as possible. Kai met her when he came across Cersei working in a small garden of her own. She appeared to enjoy working in the dirt with plants. Tanis and a few of his companions came around. They began teasing her because of her appearance then started destroying a large portion of her garden.

For the first time, he went to intervene, for it was the first time he had seen Tanis bully someone other than himself. Once more, he had found the rare likeness between himself and another person. Kai stood up against Tanis, who mocked him for protecting Cersei. There was a rumor going around that Kai was gay, for his lack of interest in the girls of the Rebellion. However, mockery could not damage Kai, and soon Tanis became hostile. For the first time, Kai fought them, and still they could not harm him. Eventually some adults came around to stop the fight, and Kai had not damaged any of the other boys too gravely, just a few good bruises and cuts. Cersei sought Kai out later to thank him, and the two became fast friends, repairing the garden together.

Tanis became venomous after Kai’s defeat of him and his cronies. The envious boy began to plan out his revenge on Kai. One day Cersei came back from the forest all beaten, bruised, and bloody. All she told Kai was that Tanis attacked her and then refused to speak more of it. She also refused to let Kai aid her injuries. The next few days, Cersei continued to avoid Kai, until he finally forced her into a confrontation. After arguing, Cersei finally confessed that Tanis had raped her that day in the forest. She hadn’t wanted to tell him because she said that was what Tanis wanted. Kai’s anger and guilt was silent, so much that Cersei could not tell if Kai cared. However, he held her as she cried, and his embrace was tender and caring even if his face remained blank. That was all Cersei needed to know that he really did care for her.

Kai finally was able to convince Cersei to tell Germanin what Tanis had done. The leader gathered more evidence, such as asking for witnesses of him being elsewhere doing the time of day that it happened. He couldn’t find any that could say Tanis had been with them or seen elsewhere. Germanin had Tanis brought to him. He gave the boy a very serious and harsh scolding; he did not tolerate such behavior in his Rebellion. He had a kind of restraining order placed on Tanis, stating that he could not be seen within fifty feet of Cersei. All the adults were told of this, and Germanin had a few of his men watching Tanis to be sure he wasn’t violating the restraining order. He told Tanis that if he could not cooperate in the Rebellion with his fellow rebels than perhaps he would like to leave it and see how he fairs against the dark elves outside the forest.

Tanis ignored Germanin’s warning. Kai awoke one night to Tanis sitting on his chest, pinning him to the ground, holding a knife. Tanis ignorantly wasted his time mocking Kai, stating how he was going to get away with killing him. Meanwhile, Kai was working out in his head how he would use his legs, wrapping them around Tanis’ waist to pulling him off his chest. The boys wrestled in Kai’s tent, Tanis trying to cut Kai with his knife, until the commotion was heard and adults were heard approaching. Tanis tumbled out of Kai’s tent and stabbed himself in the leg. The Hylian boy began to call for help, as if Kai had been the one attacking him. When the adults came, he claimed that he was just walking by to use the bathroom when Kai jumped out and attacked him.

The first few adults who came believed Tanis. For they had heard how he had raped Cersei, it was not hard to believe that maybe Kai was mad enough to attack Tanis for it. However, when Germanin came, he saw right through Tanis’s scheme. He pulled the boy in his own tent, slapped him, and lectured. Eventually, Germanin told Tanis if he did anything like this again that he would have him thrown out of the forest and left for the dark elves. Tanis finally submitted. However, his rage toward Kai grew and fermented inside him, never to be forgotten.

For the next three years, Kai and Cersei remained unbothered by Tanis, besides slight annoyances. Germanin began taking Kai on missions. It was the Rebellion’s current mission to intercept slave wagons driven by dark elves and save as many slaves as possible. He was training Kai how to fight as well. He caught on quickly, since he was able to fight off Tanis and his followers rather easily. Fighting came naturally to him. Germanin started having Kai command certain units of his men and women, co-leading with him. Eventually, they all grew to trust Kai just as they trusted Germanin.

When Kai was nineteen, Cersei came to him, wearing a dress that showed her womanly shape and her hair done up and neatly brushed. She confessed that she was in love with him. She even managed to steal his first kiss before he was able to tell her that he could not return her feelings. He then explained it to her as gently as possible. She sadly accepted that he only thought of her as a friend. Cersei quickly went back to dressing in her boyish outfits.

Germanin was injured after one of their wagon ambushes, and, because of his old age, died just as they managed to get him back to the forest. It was in his will that Kai would inherit all of his possessions and become the next leader. The rebels accepted Kai as their leader and gave him their full confidence in his ability to lead. Except for some select few who remained stubbornly loyal to Tanis. The day he died, nearly a few moments after, Kai picked up a knife and cut his hair. He had let it grow long ever since he was in the forest. It reached to his lower back by then. He then cut most of it off, until he had reached a loose hair cut that did not go past his neck. It remains his basic hair cut even now. He cut it off in his grief. Finally, Kai had come to have people to care about, and who had cared for him. His pain when he had learned that Tanis had raped Cersei and his pain now, when Germanin had passed away, was proof of it.

He continued to lead the rebel group in the forest. Until one day, a group entered Kokiri Forest from outside. It was a strange group, for it had a male Gerudo and a dark elf with them. The rest appeared to be nothing more than Hylians. Kai went to greet them, calming down an uproar when they had seen the dark elf. Finally, the Gerudo spoke to Kai, stating that he was Blaze Dragmire from the Desert Rebellion, where the Gerudos and Hylians have secretly joined forces. He asked Kai if he would like to join them with his rebellion in the desert. He was immediately intrigued by the strange group. Firstly, because one of the Hylians with them was Link himself. He invited them further into the forest, offering to let them meet the Great Deku Tree, which was quickly accepted by Link.

His eyes wandered over to a female Hylian among them. A woman with short brown hair, sword strapped to her back, and dark blue gauntlets on her hands and forearms. He found himself drawn to her, even curious of her. For the first time, he found himself attracted to someone. They introduced themselves: the woman that caught his eyes was Kira Greenthorn, the dark elf was Rontu Nyzento, there was a male Hylian with black hair who was Khaz Serwen, his sister was Leita Serwen. There was a female elf with black hair and tan skin called Tila Silverleaf, a female Hylian with red hair called Malon, a Sheikah called Impa, the princess Zelda, Link, and the Gerudo who had introduced himself previously as Blaze Dragmire.

He took them to the Deku Tree, who seemed to know Link, Zelda, and Impa. With this group, the old tree disclosed the truth of this dark empire that had taken over Hyrule. It was led by Nottuu, a man rumored to have no soul and blank white eyes. However, this man was not a dark elf. He appeared to be an elf of some kind. The Deku Tree told him that he was one of five Dark Lords. Nottuu was the Dark Lord of Void. There were four others: the Dark Lord of Pain, the Dark Lord of Sorrow, the Dark Lord of Fear, and the Dark Lord of Hate. He told them that Ganondorf had been the Dark Lord of Sorrow, who was now sealed away by Link and the Sages.

The Great Deku Tree then asked Kai to accompany Link and Zelda and aid them in whatever way he could. Kai had already made his vow to protect Link, but he did so again, in front of these people, and made a new vow to Zelda. Meanwhile, he noticed that the Sheikah, Impa was watching him. The group left the Deku Tree’s Meadow. Kai told Blaze that he would be leaving with them and his rebellion group would be joining his in the desert. However, they would not be ready to leave until the next morning. So the group from the desert decided to stay the night in the forest.

Kai left to wander off in the Lost Woods, like he often did. He warned them not to go in without a suitable guide such as Link or Saria. However, he soon heard from one of the Skull Kids that a Hylian woman had wandered into the woods, and two of the other Skull Kids were attacking her, for they had no love for adult Hylians. Kai quickly went to find her. When he did, he found her unconscious at the feet of the two Skull Kids he knew from childhood. They had shot her with five poisoned darts from their flutes. He found that it was the woman who had caught his eyes previously, Kira Greenthorn.

Kai shooed them away harshly and then went to attend her injury. However, there has been so much poison in the wound he did not have time to make the proper antidote. The five puncture marks were just above her left breast. He realized he would have to suck out the poison, and Kai found himself blushing for the first time. However, he did not let himself hesitate too much, for her life was in his hands. He sucked the poison out and then took her back to his tent to aid her more properly.

When she awoke he told her about the Skull Kids, and that they did not like adults, and so she should be wise not to venture into the woods again without the proper guides. Kira confessed that she had gone in there to look for him but promised him that she would be wiser next time. She asked him why the Skull Kids didn’t attack him. So he confessed as well that he had been raised by them. This seemed to satisfy some of Kira’s curiosity toward him. He then left her to rest and recover.

That night, after finishing the orders to prepare them for the morning, Kai sat out on one of the pillars found in the Kokiri village and played his flute. Kira found him out there, apparently having recovered from the after-effects of the poison. They talked, and Kai managed to steal his second kiss from her. Kira didn’t seem to mind at all.

The Forest Rebellion was packed and ready in the morning. They all headed out. Kai stayed close to the group from the desert, listening to their conversation. In which he learned that Kira, Rontu, and Tila were from a different world entirely. It was called Sekin, which was where the Dark Elf Empire came from. It appeared they met Link there, who had stumbled into it after wandering for seven years in a forest which was only referred to as “the gap between dimensions.” It could be accessed through Kokiri Forest.

They arrived at Gerudo’s Fortress, and then the group from the desert gathered with Nabooru, who appeared to be the leader of the Desert rebellion, in a comfortable room within the fortress. Kai was invited to join them. Apparently, he had been accepted into their little group. There they reported back to Nabooru, who was the leader of the Desert Rebellion, what the Great Deku Tree had told them about the five Dark Lords.

The next morning, Nabooru asked them if they would carry out a mission for her. She wanted them to go to Zora’s Domain and ask for their assistance in the war against the empire. After much grumbling and complaints from the group, they all agreed to go. Kai was determined to protect Link and Zelda, who were going on the mission, and so he was inclined to follow. They left right away.

Their journey to the domain had not been in vain. Through some difficulty, they convinced the Zora king to aid them. They left afterward, but had to stay the night on Zora’s River. In the morning, Kai found everyone to be in strange moods. It appeared they had been plagued with dreams the entire night.

Next, the group was thrown into the first battle of the Rebellion. Nabooru appointed Kai as the leader of one of the troops and Kira as another. The rest of their group of friends would be carrying out a different mission. The place they were attacking was the old Lon Lon Ranch. It had been expanded into something of a small town, which was a slave-trading center and a dark elf base. The rest of the group was to sneak in and rescue all the slaves, sneak them out, all within an hour, before Kai and Kira would lead the troops in.

All seemed to be going well. Kai led his troop in at the appointed time. In the city-like base, he and Kira ran into Link, who told them that something had gone wrong, and they had to flee with the slaves they had rescued, which were all children. They weren’t able to escape the ranch on time. Link’s group had consisted of Khaz and Malon. So they joined forces, forming a protective circle around the group of children, and began to move them out of the base, killing any dark elf that came too near. That went well for a while, until Kai spotted a child who had fallen behind in the chaos of battle. Iron Knuckles were released and went around slaughtering dozen of Hylians and Gerudos. One targeted the child; Kai went in quickly and defeated the corrupt knight. He left the ranch with the little boy in his arms. Once outside, he found Khaz and Malon waiting out in the field. He asked them were Kira went, and they said they had lost her in the ranch. Kai left the little boy with them, and went back in to find her.

He did, but she was being attacked by an Iron Knuckle. It had cut down all the support beams in a building that they were fighting in. The ceiling started to collapse on Kira. Kai dodged into it, placing himself over her as the stones and brick fell on them. He used his body to shield all the rocks from Kira’s, holding the weight up, trying to keep it from crushing them both. Kai managed to block out some of the pain with great difficulty. It remains a foggy memory in his mind from all the pain. All he can remember is Kira’s face and her eyes which were filled with tears and her pleas for him to not die. Kai felt the weight being lifted, and then he found it safe to pass out. When he came to, Leita had healed him and Kira. The elf threw her arms around him shortly, crying again. The group then celebrated their victory, and though it had been difficult and full of many errors, they had achieved their goals.

Soon after, Kai was visited by the little boy he had saved. His name was Tatsuya and was about eight-years-old. He came and shyly thanked Kai for saving his life. The boy continued to visit Kai and appeared to look up to and idealize him. Kai was patient with the boy, and even came to be rather fond of him—something like an older brother.

Kira and Kai spent much more time with each other during the next month at the Fortress. Eventually, they made love. Kai confessed that he loved her, and Kira returned his feelings warmly.

After a month passed, they were sent off into another battle. However, before the battle, he was approached by Impa. She gave him a beautiful Sheikah katana. Here, he discovered the truth of his past. Impa told him how he looked like a Hylian her sister had been married to, and how Kai had her sister’s black eyes. Also, she told him the necklace he owned bore the symbol of the Sheikah, the Eye of Truth. The Sheikah woman gave him the sword that had been Akata’s. Kai then took back his name. Though, he could never be Ashi. To him, that child had died with his father in the forest. So instead, he was Kai Anei Awai. He finally knew where he belonged. He later agreed to accept Impa’s offer to train him in the Sheikah ways. He then joined the others in the next battle with his new blade.

Kakariko Village had been turned into a dark elf base, enlarged as well, which also had some slaves inside it. Their goals were to blow up five main points in the village and save the slaves. Doing so would take out a large number of dark elves and their armory supplies. However, their small army had been caught during their stealthy invasion; apparently there was a spy in the Rebellion somewhere. At first their force had been captured but it quickly revolted, starting a battle. Several of the points did get blown up in the process. Nottuu, Lord Void, appeared; Link and the half-dragon, Ren, both challenged him. However, he out-matched them both even as they worked as a team. Kira attempted to aid them, but was injured. Kai thought she was dead and then furiously fought back against Nottuu. Eventually help came. The Zoras came rushing in, paving a path for escape. Their forces began to rapidly retreat. Leita came to the rescue, using her magic to counter Nottuu’s, even managing to injure him enough for their escape.

Kira had been saved, but all of their injuries they had received from Nottuu took longer to heal. They were cursed wounds, which took much to mend by Leita’s complex potions and spells. So they all rested and healed back at the fortress. Tatsuya continued to visit Kai. Eventually everyone returned to their full health again, with nothing but a few fading scars after a month.

Nabooru sent them on another mission, to Lake Hylia. There was a large dark elf base there. They were to sneak around the base and spy. They were to search for weak points and areas where they could use the Zora to invade from the shores. However, after several conflicts, a strange occurrence happened. The water in the lake rose up, apparently by itself, and smashed down on the base on its shores. Leita and Zelda had managed to create a magic shield around them all, saving them from the crushing wave. The group headed back to the fortress to report to Nabooru that the base had been destroyed.

When they got to the fortress, they found it was being attacked by dark elf forces. They all rushed in. Kai ran off to check on the living areas for the children of the fortress. Kai feared for Tatsuya’s safety. When they got there, they found the remains of a massacre. The dark elves had slaughtered all the children, or at least a large majority. Kai was silently terrified, as he was always silent in all of his emotions. He searched for Tatsuya, appearing somehow calm to Rontu. However, inside his thoughts were becoming frantic.

Kai found Tatsuya, but only his body. The child had been split open diagonally from his shoulder all the way down to his waist. It was at that moment that Kai unlocked a hidden ability: he found that he could control earth.

Many were lost after the attack on the fortress. Nabooru had been slain, and so Blaze stepped up to his place as the next king of the Gerudo. However, shortly after he was crowned, both Zelda and he were captured and taken away to the castle. Link was desperate to get them back. The Hero of Time got captured along with Khaz Serwen by Nottuu when they were trying to reclaim the Master Sword from the Temple of Time. The rest were forced to flee Hyrule Castle. They went back for their captured friends. They managed to save Zelda; however, the distressed princess informed them that Nottuu had killed Link. They then ran to rescue Khaz and Blaze, who were in the torture chambers. They found them and though Khaz was untouched, Blaze had been ravaged by the torture expert, Kushin of the Scarlet Hands. On their way out of the castle, Kai spotted himself. He saw another him and they had both stopped and stared at each other for a moment, and then Kai knew what he had to do.

They ran to Kokiri Forest for cover. Everyone was shocked and distressed, believing that Blaze was dead and Link as well. Kai took Kira and Leita, and by having them place their hands on their shoulders, he played the song Farore had taught him. It took them back in time, dropping them off in the castle a couple of hours previous, where they searched for Link and found him chained to a wall, bleeding to death. Leita healed him, and they escaped, but not before Kai stopped to let his past self spot him. They returned to the forest, where Kai waited to let his past self travel back in time. He, Kira, and Leita then stepped in to take the place of their selves. Everyone was shocked to see Link alive. They then quickly realized that Blaze was, in fact, still alive. With the combined efforts of Leita, Link, and Zelda, they managed to heal his cursed wounds enough to keep him stable enough to take him back to the fortress for farther treatment.

A little less than two months passed, it was now winter in Hyrule (early January). Zelda had taken over leading the Rebellion while Blaze was recovering. They had had a few tiny battles in the fields. Nothing major. Until finally, they were ready to launch a full-scale attack on Hyrule Castle, to take back their kingdom. They were to use a lot of stealth tactics and huge explosives. Their force was much smaller than the empire’s, so their goal was to take out as many imperial soldiers at once without losing just as many of theirs. The attack was successful, and during it, Nottuu had fallen. Though, he fell to the least likely of people: Khaz Serwen. However, the white dragon’s body had disappeared shortly after. Many had their doubts of him being truly dead. Hyrule had won back its freedom.

A year passed, and during it, Zelda took her place as the Queen of Hyrule. She made Kai, Link, Kira, Rontu, Tila, Ren, Khaz, and Leita knights of the Queen’s Royal Guard. She made Kira the captain, for Link refused the offer and became second-in-command. Blaze recovered from his injuries, and returned to his position as King of the Gerudo. Kai and his fellow knights worked under Zelda’s command as they started to heal Hyrule’s wounds. It took hours upon hours of hard labor. The young knights barely rested, but their efforts were showing fruit as Hyrule appeared to be getting back on its feet once more.

During which, Impa had taken Kai into training. Zelda often joined them, for Impa was stubbornly continuing the queen’s training as well. Kai and Zelda gained a closer friendship as they trained together. Zelda was more advanced than he was, but she had some tips to help him along. He often had to spar against her. During the beginning, she won most of the time. However, Kai started learning fast. So fast that Impa was a little shocked at his progress. Soon he was nearly Zelda’s equal, who had been improving as well. Only to them did he tell his secret: his ability to control earth and soil. He had not spoken a word of it to the others, not even Kira. Impa and Zelda helped him learn how to better wield it. They all had the suspicion that a few of the others had hidden abilities as well.

About two months after the anniversary of defeating the empire, Hyrule Market Town was attacked by a demon from Link, Rontu, Tila, and Kira’s past. He was from Sekin, the world they and the empire hailed from. His name was Nelu. The knights responded quickly, however, leaving Link and Tila behind to keep an eye on Hyrule. They chased the demon through the forest between the gap between dimensions. Nelu led them to Sekin. They lost his trail there. Shortly after losing him they lost Ren as well; there was a rock slide in the Spirit Mountains, in which the group of knights got split up. Kai wandered off; trying to find Kira and his friends in a world he knows almost nothing of.
