The Introduction to a Nightmare

An uneasiness drifted into the air, her shoulder's tensed and breath shallowed. She could feel her pulse quicken and temperature rise. The change was inexplicable, and, yet, so familiar. This was not the first time that the young woman had gone through this, nor would it be the last.

There was no one but herself in the room. Her mind isolated within this confinement. Her hands clenched, wishing to lash out, and her eyes darted, nervous. She knew there would be nothing there. It was certain, but, every time her eyes were to open, she was afraid. Afraid of what? What was there to fear? It was just a room.

No, it was not the room. It was not the inn. It had nothing to do with the time, nor place. It was her, and only her.

It felt like this mind was no longer her own. Rather, it was a demon within herself, keeping her up to a knife, inducing the nightmares she wished to never see again. For, every single time that her eyes closed, her mind went to work. It was not safe to reopen them for fear of what her mind had concocted once again.

And, such was the case now. The room lay barren save for a rather loosely made bed a fire place burning dimly. The girl sat at the edge of the bed, hands gripped onto the side almost as if for dear life. Her face, normally what seemed to belong to a gorgeous porcelain figure, was beaded with sweat and panicked. A window, completely ajar, let in the night breeze. Her sweat was unfounded and the girl knew this, which only made her hands tremble more. Rarely was she effected like this.

She let loose a sigh, sensing that the feeling had dissipated. Cautiously, she closed her eyes, thoughts of rest flooding her mind. And, as the lid came down, she felt a sudden rush of air enter the room. Without a moment's hesitation, her eyes snapped open once more, knowing full well what she would see,

The fire had gone out now, and, before her, stood a young man. His face was unnaturally pale and his eyes were pitch black, sending a plethora of emotions coursing through the girl's body, none of which were pleasant. His mouth opened, lips cracked and white, “Why, hello there, Celia. It's been a while, hasn't it?”

A chill ran down her spine, both the voice and the person making her freeze. This was the farthest her mind had gone. Never had it torture her like this. “What?” she breathed out, blinking once more only to find that the image was still there. “No.”

“Aw, that's hurts,” he took a step toward her, a frigid arm extended, “I'd expect you to at least care...”

Frantically, the demon scrambled back on the bed, going do far as to where she was pressing her back against the wall. “No,” she repeated, not believing her eyes. Since the day she had turned nineteen, these images of those long since gone entered her mind. First her mother, then her aunt... and, now. “Mitchell? No, the other images didn't speak. They never stayed. Why?”

“I guess you just like me better?” He let loose a frightening cackle. Again, he got closer, arm still extended in a rather threatening manner. “Come now, I'd expect you to be a slight bit happier.”

Slowly, her head shook, blinking rapidly, “No. You should have left by now! Why aren't you leaving?!” Her voice resonated within the room and his face turned into that of bliss. And, with that, any sign of light left the room, leaving the demon in darkness.

The real question here is why are you staying? Come back to your mind, become enveloped within your emotions once more. We've missed you...
