The GBA remake isn't completely up to snuff (they cut out 'Son of a Submariner!' D but its still better than any other FF game.
If you can get the PS1 version (called Final Fantasy Anthology, also includes FF5) then get it. You WILL NOT be dissapointed.

I beleive it was an awesome game. But I wouldn't call it the 'greatest'. Personally some of the points in the game were kinda hard to find without a guide. (The Phoenix cave, the hole was suspicious in the mountains, but who would've guessed to try landing there?) Then again FF7 had that as well.
Oh and if possible, do NOT play FFX-2. It is such a bad game, only play it if you have a fetish with Yuna.
Here are the FF's I'd advise to play in this order: FF9, FF7, FF6, FF8...Those, in my opinion, are the best in series in that order.
FF9 was generally great. It was a type of game you could play over and over.
FF7 has the best storyline. Supppppeeeerrr deep and if not paying attention, you could get lost.
FF6 was also generally great. Some parts you can easily get lost. And most of the things you would've never guessed. (If you want Shadow later on you have to wait till 4 seconds before the flying continent is to be destroyed.) Sometimes some of the characters seem important, but you later find out they are useless. But nevertheless, it has some of the greatest character development in the game.
FF8 was farely decent. Music and story were cool. Yet the "monsters level up with you" was kind of annoying. As well as the loop hole where you level up 2 characters to a high level and have a lvl 10 character....The monsters only level up to the person who has the lowest level in your party.
