Re: Why Everybody Here Is Wasting Their Time
Reasons why people are here;
(1) "Theorizing" is a communal hobby. It allows one to spend one's free time in a creative way which can be appreciated by one's peers, and creates oppertunites allowing such appreciation to be returned. Respect and acceptance, given and received, along with general enjoyment, regardless of their source, are desirable elements in daily human life. I do not beleive their persual to be a waste of time.
(2) "Theorizing" is a creative process. Much like oother section of the board, local members are here offered a costructive, albeit trivial, mannor of self expression. Developing a unique theory has about as much world relevance as drawing a picture of a bowl of fruit, but both provide a sence of achivement and pride. I do not beleive such expression to be a waste of time.
(3) "Theorizing" encourages a number of applicable skills to develop. To function on this board, one must learn to expressive oneself coherently, read (/listen) carefully the argument of their ooponents, practice decorum in conflict, understand unique semantics and jargon, and attempt to familiarize oneself, as completely as possible, with a unique subject. I do not beleive the attempterd advancement in these areas is a waste of time.
The point I'm trying to make is that the actual content of discussion that powers this forum is not the defining point of the the discussion's general "usefullness". In atleast some part, everyone here agrees with your analysis of the subject matter, but the simple fact is that there is more at work here than you suggest.
(And yes, of course I realize I'm poring on the melodrama and blowing the whole concept entirely out of proportion... another lovely theorist forum standbye which I have some respect for...)
