Take Metroid, I was playing it the other day on the NES when a housemates friend called over. He instantly said, in his own words including the 'OMG' so on so forth in seperate letters.
'OMG whats dat, like. LOL that must have come out for... like the Atari about 50 years ago LOL, I mean WTF are you doin' playin' dat ****, like. It has **** graphics AND NO COLOUR... nuff said 'bout it. Crap game'
I will not post my response for the sake of the children but lets just say he is not coming back to the house anytime soon. He was one of those WoW addicts who actually says the letters in case you want to know.

I sincerely hope that wasn't directed as an attack at me.
And even though I basically said the same thing as you (albeit tamer) I disagree with the notion that "you must have been there" to fully appreciate the aspects of the console and game.
You and I are more-or-less the same age, so we were there to witness the release of the N64 and the subsequent games that came with, so we will always look back with a nostalgic eye, though that by no means that we are the only people that may appreciate them.
I know countless people that were not around for the N64 era, and were introduced in the middle of the Gamecube era, but despite that, they are able to look back at the back-catalogue of Nintendo games, play them, and appreciate them as games for what they are.
