Your Game of 2004?

A year almost gone. 2003 has been a good year for games in some ways.

Zelda.
Metroid Prime.
ManHunt
Panzer Dragoon
Project Gotham
And so on!

But what game do you think will be the best game of 2004?
Or what game cant you wait to get?

Half Life 2?
Halo 2?
The New Zelda?
Metroid Prime 2?
Resident Evil 4?

You tell me!

Re: Your Game of 2004?

Zelda won't be out in 2004. At least not here.

As for other games...in no particular order, though I'm sure that HL2 will be the best out of them...
  • Half-Life 2
  • DOOM III
  • Halo 2
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost
  • Metroid Prime 2
  • Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

As for others...I don't really know what else there is that has been confirmed to be coming in 2004 that I really want...at least, I can't really remember.

Re: Your Game of 2004?

Well most of these probably won't be most peoples choices, but yeah...
  • The next Zelda...if it comes out in '04
  • Sam & Max: Freelance Police
  • Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude
  • Sonic Heroes (I thought it came out this year O_o)

Re: Your Game of 2004?

Metroid Prime came out in 2002, OKO.

Myself, I think Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, or Star Ocean 3 or will be the best games next year. Unless, due to some improbable miracle, the next Zelda actually comes out next year.

Re: Your Game of 2004?

Half Life 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3: SE are the only two 2004 games that interest me for the moment. Halo 2 looks promising, also.

Re: Your Game of 2004?

A new Zelda game (for GBA as I know, not sure if it is out 2004).

Well, that's about everything, I don't see any good and really good games coming out in 2004... I could be wrong, though.

I thinked really hard, and I can't come up with any other good games.

Re: Your Game of 2004?

I agree with lord-of-shadow on this one. Those 3 are what Im looking forward to next year.
If it so happens that Xenosaga episode 2 comes out next year, then that will definatley top my list.
Kingdom Hearts 2 would be another possibility. The trailer looked promising...

Re: Your Game of 2004?

DOOM III looks really good, but I am doubting it's long-term worth. The game will most likely not feature a whole lot of multiplayer action, as that is being saved for Quake IV, and I don't think they'll be putting in a whole lot of extras. However, hopefully the mod community will be up to the task with this game.

I personally see Half-Life 2 as being the better game overall (though DOOM III looks very good). Though DOOM III's graphics are really great, they also rely heavily on pixel shaders, which older cards will not support. The game is also very low-poly, not coming much higher than games that came out nearly two years ago. However, they take advantage of the new cards' features. The game features bump-mapping on every service, incredibly high-res textures, normal maps (which allow lights to interact with models, like folds in clothing, without actually modelling the folds).

It's engine has alot of limitations, though, and people don't seem to realize this. While it has all the snaz-bang effects that make the game all shiny, the engine simply cannot support large outdoor environments (or make natural-looking ones at that, due to it's low-poly limitations), and cannot render alot of characters all at once, especially when multiple light sources are occuring. The lighting effects, while revolutionary, are also very fake looking, with sharp edges on shadows and incredibly dark areas that are just downright cartoon-looking. They suit the game's style, though, so it's more of a gripe than anything.

Personally, I think that Half-Life 2 will be the shooter king. When it comes to gameplay, HL2 is top of it's game. The AI is incredible, which uses a different system than normal AI. Instead of the soldiders/monsters deciding what to do on their own, the game world will actually give them a list of things they can do. For instance, in one example, Gordon runs into an abandoned building while being chased by guards. He shuts the door, and pushes a dishwasher in front of it (with objects stacked on top falling off realistically). The soldier tries to open the door to no avail. There is a slight pause, and he is heard radioing for backup. He then proceeds to spray his machine gun through the windows in an attempt to hit Gordon. Then as backup arrives, a soldier rams against the door and smashes it open.

As far as graphics, it isn't quite as impressive looking, but the engine's capabilities are far greater. It features the Havok 2.0 physics plug-in, and can be used to make virtually any game effectively. There are interviews in which developers have talked about making RPGs with the Source engine, even though it is primarily made for FPS games. The game features bump-mapping, reflections, specular lighting, amazing lip-syching technology, which looks real, and can be fitted to nearly any language with virtually no alteration of code. It can also be applied to any sound file. Heck, you could even replace your voice with that of a main character's, and need no changing of anything. Just put it in, and watch the lips move.

Ugh...gonna stop now...getting...too nerdy...feels topic will die due to others...not...comprehending...

At least Carmack is nice enough to port it to all consoles, Linux, and Mac, and not use Direct X 9 like the people at Valve choose to do. >_>
Valve didn't write their engine. The engine API they use runs under both Direct 3D and Open GL, and is designed to run on all modern platforms. It can even run pure software. Carmack's decision to use OpenGL was based largely on Direct3D's broken API specification in 1996. I'd actually be interested in hearing his thoughts regarding OpenGL, now that it's bottlenecking development through implementation-dependent state scalability and OO-counterintuitive specification, worstened with assumed GLUT dependence.

*cough*.... but I digress.

- Halo 2, definitely.
- Half Life 2, although I'll forever view it as a 2003 title.
- Doom III
- Fable, if it's released this year, heh.
- True Fantasy Online.

Re: Your Game of 2004?

Why do you use Linux? Windows is the better choice, IMO. Oh yes, I forgot Condition Zero (sequel to Counter-Strike, let's hope the sequel will have less idiotic players playing it) and Unreal 2004 is a game I am also looking forward to...

I thinked even harder this time, and still, no good game pops up in my head... Damn pop-up blockers
