Well, getting involved with a good MUD could probably teach you far more about the general aspects of Game Design than any programming course.
I'd recommend tracking down an established fairly small, n00b friendly,
diverse fantasy multi user dungeon. Try playing around for a week, and, if you enjoy the experience, ask to codesign a room. You'll build from there.
