No one has actually said that.
It still happens in super modern games as well. I've seen some CS games do the same thing, and they're on the most modern hardware you can get. It's just something that happens with 3D as you've got to consider the framework behind these games. They're just wire frames with padding on them. I'm not surprised that the cameras break the walls sometimes. It's better that than it being jumpy and hitting the side repeatedly.
For a game that's awful for breaking the mould of the world it is in, play Goemon on the N64.
