Dawn of Shadows

Part 4: Justin Heidelberger

Kokiri forest, and the Great Deku Tree, that is where Kaepora Gaebora hinted at him to go. That bird seldom did give him straight answers, but luckily the riddles where normaly easy to get. Link could see the forest in the distance. “Not long now. Should have called Epona, but she is too recognizable I don’t want the guards to see her running to me. Perhaps later, after they think I have left Hyrule,” he said to himself. That was what he thought was happening, and for the most part it was true.

“Search the borders make sure the imposter does not leave Hyrule!” the imposter Link was demanding of the Hyrulean guards, “He has stolen my horse Epona as well, so if you see her you know he is not far.” The Imposter Link smirked a bit at his last comment. It would explain why he himself did not have Epona, and why he did not take up mount to assist. His plan was working, and soon enough he would gain access to the Temple of Time. That is where his plan would come together.

“Hey..!? Who goes there..?” piped up a small voice from one of the Kokiri children whom was guarding the entrance to their forest. His walk had taken long enough to bring upon dusk, and so the Kokiri where guarding their entrance from Stalchilds. In the dim light he could see there was one guard near the entrance and two standing above him on a small cliff, atleast to him it was small. Each of them were clinging to their weapons awaiting an answer.

Link paused for a few seconds thinking this over, he should not use his name. But he should not lie either, “Just a Peaceful Traveller, coming to get blessings from the Great Deku Tree.” ,he said to them loud enough for all three to hear. It was not uncommon for travellers to make their way through the forest to the Kokiri Village, and to sometimes request from Mido the privilige of seeing the Great Deku Tree.

“May the Goddesses, guard your travels. You may pass into Kokiri, but be warned horrible things await those that wish to cause trouble in our peaceful village.” The leader of the guards spoke up to Link, he was looking a bit odd at his clothing. Opening his mouth to say something Link quickly cut in, “That is the last thing on my mind, I bid you farewell.”

He made his way towards the path to the Great Deku Tree, as he aproached the path he hear a loud yelling, “WAIT!!!!!” Turning quickly he saw Mido running from his home in the stump of a rather large tree. Link sighed thinking to himself, “Does Mido ever sleep..?”

“You can’t go past, especially looking like that. I mean that dagger is pathetic do you really think you could take out a DekuBaba with that thing?” Mido said talking, not waiting for an answer, “You know there was a Swordsmith here not too long ago. Infact I am almost positive he said he was going to head into the Lost Woods. We told him no one but Moblins lived back there, but he would not listen. Knowing him he is probably lost, good for him. But if you feel like rescueing the Swordsmith I am sure he might reward you. But you know..you have to get through the Lost Woods first. Like that is going to happen.” He pointed towards the entrance to the Lost Woods, “That is the Lost Woods, good luck you are going to need it.” Mido said laughing putting his hands behind his head.

Link shook his head as he turned heading towards the Lost Woods, “If it isn’t one thing it is another. Oh well, I am sure this Swordsmith is in need of asistance, and I am just the guy to give it” Link thought to himself as he stepped into the Lost Woods. It was silent except for something faint. He could not pickout what it was, but his curiousity got the better of him. He turned heading towards a hollowed out trunk made into a makeshift passageway. It was a bit louder this time, he was getting closer. Another hollowed out tree trunk and he could make out what the noise was, laughter. “Skull Kids…” Link whispered as he moved towards the sound, one more opening and he saw them, three Skull Kids gathered around a merchant taunting him and laughing all the while.

“Leave him be!” Link said loudly to the Skull Kids whom just turned smiling and laughing at Link now all three singing to him,

“In this forest we shall be,Where you shall find us boys three,Find us three and you shall see,We will give this man up to Thee.”And with that the three Skull Kids disappeared along with the Swordsmith. “Hiding in the forest, this should be fun..” His voice was thick with sarcasm on the last part. As he moved around the forest listening and looking for any signs of the Skull Kids.
