Inventory Items

ImageHeart Containers and Pieces of Heart
At the start of the game, Link only has three heart containers.  As the story progresses, you will gain additional containers to fill your life meter.  Another way to gain more containers is to collect Pieces of Heart.  For every four pieces you receive, you will have one full heart container.  There are twelve pieces of heart scattered around Koholint making a total of fourteen Heart Containers.

ImageYoshi Doll
Where can you find one? What will you do once you have it?  Some say that this doll will lead you to a great fiasco.

ImageFlippers
When in the water, press the A Button to swim and the B Button to dive.  You need these magical flippers to swim in deep bodies of water.

Dungeon Items

ImageTreasure Chests
You may find many treasure chests in the dungeons. These can contain rupees, power-increasing items and dungeon items (you can open and take the contents of a treasure chest only once). Some treasure chests are in plain view; others will appear only after you have defeated all the other monsters in a room.

ImageMap and Compass
The Map will show you all the rooms in the dungeon. The Compass will indicate the location of the dungeon's Nightmare and the position of the treasure chests that you have not yet opened.

ImageStone Slabs and Fragments

ImageNigmare Keys and Small Keys
You will need the Nightmare Key to enter the Nightmare's lair. The Small Keys, which can be used only once, are used to open other locked doors in the dungeon.
