ImageLink's Sword is his main weapon, and will be Link's source of power throughout the game.  There are four different swords collected in A Link to the Past. This sword is given to you by your Uncle at the beginning of the game.  It is the first sword you will receive and holds no great power.  This sword has the power level of one.

Image
ImageThe legendary blade that rests in the Lost Woods until the hero with all three Pendants wakes it.  This blade has the power to emit a beam from its blade to attack enemies from a distance.  The Master Sword has a power level of two.

Image
ImageWhen you bring the Master Sword to the Blacksmiths in Kakariko Village, they will agree to temper it into a more powerful weapon.  The Tempered Sword glows a powerful red and does 2x the damage of the Master Sword.  It holds the power level of three.

Image
ImageIf you ever are to reach the Mysterious Pond inside the Pyramid of Power, you should dip your Tempered Sword inside the water.  For when you do, the Great Faerie will present you with the Golden Sword.  The Golden Sword is the most powerful weapon in the game and deals 4x the damage of the Master Sword.  This sword will aid Link in his quest to save Hyrule.

Image
ImageLink carries his shield in his hand at all times.  His shield blocks most attacks made by enemies, and can often save him from trouble.  Along with your first level sword, your Uncle presents you with this.  It can only deflect arrows and sword strikes, and therefore, holds the power level of one.

Image
ImageThe Fire shield can be bought at a store late in the adventure or can simply be granted to you by the Faerie in the Waterfall of Wishing.  This shield can block fire attacks, which could not be blocked before.  This shield is the second power level.

Image
ImageThe Magic Shield, also known as the Mirror Shield, can deflect any type of projectile attack.  This is the strongest shield that Link can obtain and greatly increases the blocking power offered by Fire Shield.  This shield is the last power level of three.

Image
ImageThis is Link's first tunic, which he has worn all his life.  Enemies that attack Link do normal amount of damage when he wears this.  This is the basic tunic.

Image
ImageThe Blue Tunic is hidden in the Ice Palace in the Dark World and is Link's second tunic.  When Link wears this, the damage taken by enemies is reduced by ¼, making it a necessity on your adventure.

Image
ImageThis is Link's final tunic and best armor in the game.  It is found in Turtle Rock in the depths of the Dark World.  When this tunic is worn, it reduces damage taken by ½, making the final battles a bit easier.

Image
ImageThis magic footwear has been handed down by the family of one of the Seven Wise Men.  If you wear these shoes, you can run incredibly fast.  You will receive the Pegasus Shoes from the wise man Sahasrahla.

Image
ImageIf you wear this glove, you can pick up objects, such as rocks, that you cannot lift with your bare hands.  The Power Glove is located in the Desert Palace.  If you can get your hands on this glove, try lifting a few things.

Image
ImageIf you put this mitt on your hand, you will find that it is a synch to lift even the heaviest of rocks and boulders.  The Titan's Mitt is found in the Dark World and becomes very useful in Link's quest.  This mitt holds awesome strength, and should not be taken lightly.

Image
ImageThese Flippers belong to the Zora, the man-fish, whose domain is the wet blue yonder.  They are a necessity -- you cannot swim without them (if you try swimming without the Flippers you will be returned to land).  To get through this adventure, you must get your feet wet, so find King Zora as soon as possible.

Image
ImagePeople who enter the Dark World are transformed into a shape that reflects what is in their hearts.  You can prevent this by obtaining the Moon Pearl, which protects its bearer from the power of the Triforce.  Without this pearl, you are helpless.

Image
ImageAt the start of the game, Link has only three Heart Containers, but you can find many more during your adventures.  You will find your first in the Sanctuary and will receive others one by one as you defeat Dungeon Masters.

Image
ImagePieces of Heart Containers are hidden all over Hyrule.  If you collect four Pieces of Heart, you will gain one full Heart Container.  If you manage to collect all the Heart Containers and Pieces of Heart, you will have twenty hearts in your life gauge total.

Image
ImageYou can refill Heart Containers that have been lost in battle by finding small hearts.  each small heart refills a Heart Container.  Small hearts sometimes appear when you defeat an enemy and can also be found in bushes and pots.  If you capture one of the little faeries that inhabit Hyrule, you will get seven hearts.  If you find the elusive Faerie Queen, she will restore all your lost hearts.  During a long adventure, it is a good idea to remember where faeries live!

Image
ImageYou can restore Magic Power, which is used to power different magic items, by finding these decanters.  These come in two sizes, big and small.  A big decanter completely refills your magic meter, and a small one restores one eighth of your magic meter.  As with small hearts, you can also get these from enemies you defeat.  During the game, you can set the level of Magic power consumption at 50%, effectively doubling the amount of Magic power you have.

Image
ImageYou can put many things in a bottle and keep for use at a later point in the game.  You can get up to four bottles, which are vital to your success on a long adventure.  Obtain these bottles as soon as you can.

Image
ImageYou can restore life and magical power by buying Magic Potions.  Many shops in Hyrule carry potions but you must have a bottle to carry them in.  The Green Potion completely restores Magic Power, the Red Potion refills all your lost hearts and the Blue Potion completely restores both hearts and Magic Power.

Image
ImageThe people of Hyrule use precious stones called Rupees as currency.  There are three kinds of Rupees.  The green rupee is worth one rupee, the blue is worth five and the red rupee is worth twenty.

Image
ImageYou will find Rupees and Hearts hidden away in these bushes.  Cut them down or pull them up to reveal the hidden items.

Image
ImageThese are scattered throughout the dungeons.  These pots come in handy, because you can pick them up and throw them at the enemy to cause damage.  You can also find hearts in some pots, while some hold arrows and bombs too.  There are even some pots that hide switches that open doors.

Image
ImageIf rooms are divided by a locked door, you will need that door's key.  There are two types of keys, small keys and big keys.  Small keys can only be used once, while big keys can be used as many times as you like.

Image
ImageYou will need the big key to open certain dungeon doors and the big treasure chest.  The Big Key of a dungeon is usually well guarded, so be on alert.

Image
ImageThe dungeon map shows the layout of all the rooms in the dungeon and your current position.

Image
ImageThe compass point out the location of the evil master of the dungeon.  *There is no compass in Hyrule Castle.

Image
ImageIn each dungeon you will find many treasure chests with Rupees and other various things inside of them.  The Map, Compass, and Big Key are also hidden in treasure chests.

Each dungeon also has a Big Treasure Chest that contains a special items.  In some cases, these items will be a necessity to get through later parts of the game.  You will need the big key to open these chests.

Image
ImageIn the dungeons there are blue and orange blocks which rise and fall into the floors.  Strike the Crystal Switch with your sword or some other weapon to make the blocks move.  When the Crystal is red, the orange blocks will retract.  When the Crystal is blue, the blue blocks will retract.

Image
ImageThere are three Pendants: one carved with the Crest of Courage (Pendant of Courage), another with the Crest of Power (Pendant of Power), and the third with the Crest of Wisdom (Pendant of Wisdom).  These Pendants are kept guarded in the Palaces of Hyrule.

Image
ImageThe Seven Maidens were imprisoned in these Crystals by the evil wizard Agahnim.  Zelda is the last of the maidens, you must hurry through the Dark World and recover the Crystals.

Image
ImageThis is the first item you are likely to find in your adventure.  The Lantern lights the torches in the dungeons and brightens the dungeon rooms.  It consumes Magic Power to light the torches, and they go out after time.

Image
ImageIf you hit an enemy with this, it will be stunned for a short time (some enemies will sustain damage when hit by the Boomerang).  The Boomerang can also retrieve distant Rupees and Hearts.

Image
ImageA bomb blast will damage enemies and blow holes in some walls, but it will also damage Link if he is too close to the blast.  The bomb's fuse will burn for about two seconds, and up to two bombs can be set at a time.  You can also pick up a bomb you have placed and throw it before it explodes.

Image
ImageThere are bugs and other things hidden away in the bushes and trees.  If you time it right, you can catch them with this net and store them in Bottles for later use.  You should definitely try to catch many things with this item.

Image
ImageThe monoliths left by the Hylian people are inscribed with ancient script.  If you find an inscription that you cannot read, use this book and its meaning will become clear.  This book is stored in the Library of Kakariko Village.

Image
ImageThe Bow is a powerful weapon that can be found in the first palace, but you will need arrows to use it.  Arrows sometimes appear when you defeat an enemy and sometimes they are hidden in pots.  There is a rumor that somewhere in Hyrule you can obtain a silver bow and arrow of greater strength.

Image
ImageThese sweet tasting, strange smelling mushrooms are an ingredient for making Magical Powder.  You can find these while wandering in the Lost Woods.

Image
ImageImageThis magical concoction has unpredictable effects on certain things. Try sprinkling it on a bush to cause a strange chemical reaction. Its effect on other living things is said to be stranger.

Image
ImageYou can use this mirror to escape from the Dark World to the Light World.  The portal that is created can also be used as a gate back into the Dark World.  But be warned.  If the place where you reappear in the Light World is a place where you cannot normally go (such as the inside of a wall) you will be forced back into the Dark World.  Note that the mirror will also return you to the entrance when used in a dungeon.  The Magical Mirror cannot be used inside a house or cave.

Image
ImageUse this hammer to pound stakes and other obstacles into the ground.  The Magic Hammer is also effective against some enemies, but it is best used in conjunction with another weapon.

Image
ImageThis device consists of a long chain with a hook on the end.  You can fling the hook into a tree, pot or treasure chest and then pull yourself to the location of the hook be reeling in the chain.  This will enable you to cross holes in the ground or other such obstacles.  The Hook Shot can also be used as a weapon.

Image
ImageUse this to dig holes in the ground.  You cannot dig in some surfaces.  You need this shovel to find the Flute.

Image
ImageA lonely lad will give you the Flute, which plays a beautiful but slightly sad melody.  When you are granted it, be sure to fulfill the request made of you.  If you have the Flute, it will make your long and difficult journey a lot easier.

Image
ImageImageYou can use this magic wand to launch a sub-zero blast of air which will quickly freeze most enemies.  Weaker enemies will be destroyed by this weapon, and even stronger enemies might become solid blocks of ice.

Image
ImageImageThis rod spits out a ball of fire that will burn most enemies to a crisp.  Some enemies are especially vulnerable to fire, so use the Fire Rod wisely.  The Fire Rod can also be used like the Lantern to light torches, but from a distance.

Image
ImageImageThis mystic staff creates blocks formed of pure magic power.  These blocks can be thrown or pushed on to the enemy to cause damage.  (Power blocks disintegrate if they touch an enemy five times).  This cane can place magical blocks on switches if there are no real blocks around.  If you strike a magic block with the staff, it will shatter and the fragments will damage enemies nearby.  You will need this staff to get through the Turtle Rock dungeon in the dark world.

Image
ImageImageThe beam from this staff surrounds and protects you from all damage.  The magical barrier also does damage to most enemies.  Wave the staff again to deactivate the barrier.  Note that this item consumes Magical Power in proportion to how long it is used.  The Staff of Byrna is well hidden on Death Mountain.

Image
ImageImageLink will turn invisible when he wears this Magic Cape.  While hidden from the enemies' view, you can attack them without taking damage.  Link may also be able to pass through some objects while wearing this.  Although the cape is a useful item, it will consume Magic Power while you are using it.

Image
ImageImageOnly the Hero bearing the Master Sword can retrieve this medallion.  The magic of this medallion sets off explosive forces around you which engulf the enemy in flames.

Image
ImageImageThe Ether Medallion charges your sword with a cold chill that freezes the surrounding enemies.  The Ether Medallion has the same effect as the Ice Rod, but it works against all the enemies on the screen.

Image
ImageImageIf you drive your sword into the ground when you have this medallion, the earth will come to life and shake violently.  Such an attack, and the fear it creates, is bound to affect the enemy.
