Basic Information
Our Chat Room is one of the largest Zelda based chat rooms online. We
have large group of regular users. The topic of conversation here is
about basically anything, so don't be shocked if you come expecting talk
about Zelda, and we are discussing movies, politics or anything in
between.
Unlike our Forums, the rules in here are very lenient. Just avoid mass
flooding (aka spamming) and general misbehavior towards other people in the room.
Also be sure to follow the advices given to you by the Channel
Operators, also known as OPs. You can recognize an OP by the prefix
in front of his name, either "@", "&" or "~" - By default they are
at the top of the list of users. You can consider them the equivalent of the moderators on the forums. Many of them are, in fact, moderators on the forums.

Commands
Once you have joined the Chat, there are tons of commands that can do
different stuff for you, and all the the commands here will be
recognized by any IRC client.
- "/nick yournick" - Changes your nickname. Replace "yournick" with the desired nickname.
- "/msg nickserv REGISTER password email" - Once you have
picked your desired nickname, it is clever to use this command to
register your nickname. This prevents anyone else from (ab)using your
nickname, and it also allows the channel operators to give you a
special channel status, like +v (voice, channel VIP).
- "/join #channel" - Using the "/join" command will let your
join different chat rooms. By default, if you connect through our Java
Applet, you will be in our channel, which is conveniently titled
"#Zelda". PS: All channels have a # prefix in front of their names on
IRC.
- "/me goes to Hollywood" - This is the action command. By
putting "/me" in front of what you are typing, you will be typing in 3rd
person, and what you are typing will be displayed like this : "* your nick goes to Hollywood".
- "ctrl + b/u/k" - Pressing ctrl + any of these letters will let you type in BOLD, UNDERLINE,
or COLOR respectively. Use bold and underline to emphasize something,
but be sure not to overuse it. Colors are generally disallowed in our
channel.
Joining the Chat Room via Means Other Than the Webchat
The webchat provided in the Forums isn't the only way you can connect to ZU's chat. In fact, there are standalone programs for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux that will connect you to our chatroom without a browser window needing be open.
- For Windows, we recommend mIRC. You can download it and use it for free by going to their website. Once you have downloaded and installed mIRC, joining the Zelda Universe
chat is a breeze. Simply open up mIRC, and status window type "/server
irc.gnug.org" (this connects you to our IRC server) - Once you
are connected, in the same window type "/join #Zelda", and viola, you
will be in our chat room! Once you are there, don't hesitate to ask if
there is something that puzzles you in regards to the chat - The
chatters will be glad to help you out.
- For Mac OS X, we recommend Colloquy. Colloquy is elegant and incredibly simple to use, especially for one who knows little about chat rooms or IRC in general. Likewise, it is also incredibly powerful. On top of that, it also works with your iPhone or iPod Touch!
- For Linux, we recommend XChat. XChat is also for Windows, but the Windows version is not free of charge as the Linux version is. XChat is renowned for its user interface and ease of use - the basic setup is similar to that of mIRC. Simple add a new network in the network configuration panel, and set the servers as "irc.gnug.org". Save your new network and connect to it.
FAQ
Here are some of the frequently asked questions in regards to our chat
room, and the answers. Please read through this little FAQ before you start bombarding the chat with questions!
- Can I be a Channel Operator?
No, no and no, no, no, you can not. Just like in the Forums, we
select our Operators (Moderators) from a list of active participants
that we feel will do a good job being in charge of the chat.
- What does the + in front of some chatters names mean?
The + is also referred to as Voice, and in our chat room it
means that the user is a channel VIP, in other words a regular
returning member of the chat room. Practically, the only real use it has
is if one of the Operators decides to change the status of the chat to
"+m" - Then only Operators and people with Voice can say something in
the chat.
- Can I have voice?
We'll see...
- The Moderators keep kicking me out of the room, why?
This is because you are misbehaving. If an operator kicks you
out of the room, it is because you have done something which is not
appreciated or allowed. A good advice would be to not repeat the
actions that got you kicked, or else you might quickly find yourself
banned from the chat-room altogether.
- What are the rules?
