So, I'll keep it short: We're not just swapping skins for this one. As I've said before, we're moving to a whole new backend system. For the technofiles among our visitors, the site currently runs off of the free and open-source software known as "Joomla!". Joomla! runs everything on the site, and lets us make news articles and publish Zelda pages easily. It even categorizes everything for us and makes pretty URL's. But that said, it's pretty buggy. It's pretty slow, too. And, let's face it - it doesn't do as much as we can do with ZU. So, we're sorry to say good-bye, but Joomla! is going down the toilet. For good. In its place, we'll be switching to the much nicer software, Wordpress. Wordpress is constantly being updated, is lightning-fast, easier to use, and more configurable. Which means we can get (and already have gotten) new features added to ZU in a flash, and implement more right from the start. In addition, Wordpress is hardly buggy at all - so things that don't work right now and have no hope of working in the future (main site login "remember me", anyone?) will work flawlessly in Wordpress. We've already got a way to link Wordpress to the forums, so your forum account will automatically work with Wordpress once we switch. But that's just the backend. That's on our side - that makes it easier for our staff (and me) to add pages that you'll get to enjoy. But what the heck do you care? You're not running the site. And we know that - so we're not just switching the site software, either. In the past, ZU's "revamps" or "relaunches" have all been, as I feel, halfway done. ZU got a fancy layout, or switched software, or did something else that, in theory, sounds great - but a big step was left out that kept the revamps only half complete. All they did was switch the skin. Or all they did was switch the software. Meanwhile, all of the information and images left over from the old site version got left behind, and began to look obsolete. We've still got that problem. And we're not ashamed to admit it - we've still got pictures with blue backgrounds from the olden days. And then we've got some random pictures that are nice, but with weird white backgrounds. Do we have any sort of standard with those things? Not yet. So, my first little tidbit to all of you: We're not just switching skins. We're going to replace every image on the site. They'll do more than fit into the new layout. They'll provide quick information on the enemy or boss you're looking at, like only a few of our images do right now (and those still have the ugly white background). And, when you click on them, a high resolution shot will popup - in lightbox. That is, if it isn't already part of something else we've got planned. Then it won't pop up in lightbox. (If you don't know what "lightbox" is, it's even more software - it's that cool shapeshifting box that darkens the rest of the site and stretches out an image. Some galleries use it. And it's cool.) But you'll have to raise a bit more money before we let you know whatever else we're doing with ZU. And we're doing a lot more than replacing images. So keep donating - I can already smell that hot fresh ZU Revamp. Comments (11)

What version of Joomla were you using before? Was it upgraded to the stable 1.5 that came out last month? What does Wordpress offer over Joomla?

We haven't upgraded to 1.5 yet, but we're probably going to soon. Right now, we're running 1.0.13. Nothing seems to change from version to version, but I do expect some good things from 1.5 - I didn't know it came out a month ago, however. Wordpress is mostly just easier to use and easier to run. Plus, there's a plugin for everything. I've already built up a test site with most of the features planned for ZU's revamp, and it wasn't too hard to cook up with Wordpress, but I know it would have been difficult with Joomla. Joomla is more complete out-of-the-box, but Wordpress is just so much friendlier and faster.

Ah, good to know, thanx. I am actually building a couple Joomla pages, so it startled me to hear that ZU (one of my favorite sites) would suddenly be jumping ship. Joomla 1.5 is very nice, and I hope to build lots of nice extensions for it. I use Wordpress for one of my old blogs, but I didn't view it as a very good CMS like Joomla is. Apparently, you've found many good uses for Wordpress. I look forward to the new site. :D

Wordpress can easily be tweaked to work like a CMS. I actually find it more organized than Joomla. Joomla feels, to me, very static and also very bloated, while Wordpress feels light and flexible. Take a look at the newest version, it's got some great features - autosave, for one, which Joomla oddly lacks. Autosave is the greatest feature a CMS could possibly offer. Joomla, on the other hand, likes to randomly log me out while I'm writing, say, some news - and then I'll just have lost everything. Oh, and I looked at 1.5 - no way am I going through all this kind of crazy migration procedure when we're about to switch to wordpress ;) - 1.0.13 it'll be until the relaunch! It's a shame, too, 1.5 looks quite nice compared to what we've got now.

Does anyone else think this is a scam?

Why would anyone spend that much money on a graphic designer. I'm not saying this definitely is a scam, but it sounds a lot ilke it. Nobody donate until we are given more information.

If Zelda Universe appeared a month ago, I would suspect a scam. However, not only is this site ancient, a relationship of trust has been built between the staff and members. The staff has never given members a reason not to be trust them. There would be many more red flags if a scam were taking place. And the $2000 price tag really doesn't surprise me. Friendly favors aside, asking a credible designer/coder to do a custom build costs a GREAT deal of money for class results.

Being the son of a former professional graphics designer (username aside), the price tag doesn't surprise me at all. And being part of the staff in ZU, I know it's not a scam :P So take it from me. Also, I'd like to say it's about time we moved from Joomla...

I really wanted to donate, but my parents just sorta' frowned at me when i mentioned giving money to a fan site. So I didn't pursue it. Well anyway, good luck you seem to be raising up money pretty quickly I definitely see the $2000 price tag getting met in time.

I don't really think its a scam, I was just surprised that no one else did and I just felt like stirring up some controversy.
