In terms of gameplay, The Wind Waker evolves nearly every aspect of the mechanics seen in the previous games. However, the game is not perfect. There are certainly a few areas which are actually a step down. Before the game’s release, I complained that getting rid of the guardian fairy took away some of the mystique of the games. That is only one issue; there is actually a larger issue at stake.

“Ow! My eye!” Those were my first words upon receiving The Wind Waker from EB Games. As I slid into my car, I glanced at the new game. I was about to drive home, but I couldn’t resist, and promptly opened the package. Since the car was parked in a sunny spot, I was blinded by the bright, shiny gold disc. “Wow, I like this game already,” I thought.

At the time of this writing, The Wind Waker is not out yet. But by the time you read this, I will be venturing across Hyrule once more, provided the ‘Cube doesn’t spontaneously explode. I am certainly eager to see what new items Nintendo has come up with for this new adventure, but there are still some old items that I would love to see appear again. In fact, some of these old items have yet to appear in the more fully realized world of 3-D. With that in mind, I have constructed a top ten list. Keep in mind that I am not including on this list anything that I know will definitely appear in the game (like bombs). Since I have avoided spoilers as much as possible, I don’t know the full list of items that will appear in the game. That said, here is my top 10 list of those old items I hope to find as I adventure across the watery world of Hyrule:

It’s coming. In a mere week, the biggest Gamecube game yet hits stores in America. It won’t be long before you will guide Link on a new quest through a new world of water and wind. Here are my thoughts on the impending release of The Wind Waker.

1Ever since The Wind Waker was first shown as a cartoon, numerous pros and cons have been thrown back and forth for the new look. While this list is by no means comprehensive, it includes ones that I have seen on the net, in addition to a few of my own. Before we go on to the list, I should remind you of several things:

It’s inevitable. Someone will pop into a random Wind Waker-related thread in a forum and comment, “I hate the graphics.” And then, before the thread moves on, someone else will retort, “You haven’t even played it yet! Can’t you look past the graphics? It’s all about the gameplay. Gameplay is more important than graphics.” The Celda-hater is left speechless. After all, it’s viewed as common wisdom of the gaming community that gameplay is indeed better than the graphics. And it’s true, but only to a certain point. In fact, I argue that some people will not look past the graphics when they play it, and not only that, but that it doesn’t mean they’re shallow gamers. Surprised? Read on.

Ocarina of Time is almost upon us. Again. Maybe you’re one of the lucky that has been able to receive the bonus disc already, but if you’re like me, you will have to wait until the 16th (if you’re in the USA) to pick up yours. (My phone call to EB Games: “Hello, I was just wondering if you receiv-” “Yes we did, but you can’t pick it up until the 16th.” “Well, uh, you mean, uh . . .” “Yeah, Zelda.” “Wow, you must have gotten a lot of phone calls today.” “Yeah, bye.” *click*.) But ahh, the nostalgia you will feel as you play through the N64 masterpiece on your ‘Cube. But I would guess that you will be more inclined to breeze through it more quickly this time around. If that’s the case, then I would suggest that you use one of the most useful but neglected weapons in the game: the Deku Nut. Yes, you heard me. The Deku Nut.

Link. We all know him as the silent, mysterious hero in the green tunic who is there to push back the forces of darkness, time and time again. He’s back again for more adventures in the upcoming game, The Wind Waker for GameCube, but he may no longer be known as “the silent, mysterious hero.”
