The following scenario should be a familiar one for Smash players: you’ve inflicted tons of damage onto your foe, and you’re ready to deal the final blow. As you run full pelt towards them, you suddenly find yourself smacked into the air in the opposite direction, after having something thrown at you. You just ran into one of those pesky Bumpers!
The highly powerful reflecting item returns in Super Smash Bros. 4, having been confirmed via series director Masahiro Sakurai’s “pic of the day”. Much like the new Home Run Bat before it, it’s sporting an all-new design.
Sakurai says on Miiverse:
“The Bumper is back with a detailed new design. This also means there will be no Flippers.”
He also shared a second image of the Bumper, showing the underside.
“Here’s the back side of the Bumper. There’s way too much detail put into the side you can’t really see. The designers really went overboard.”
Sakurai and his team are well-known for the detail they put into their models; so it’s amusing to see even that even he is surprised at the end result of the Bumper’s design.
The “Flipper” that he referred to in the first image’s caption is a similar item that replaced the Bumper in Melee. You can see it and all variations of the Bumper below in a comparison shot, thanks to Twitter user SmashBros-Miiverse.
