Popular gaming website 1Up has recently posted a video explaining the similarity, and possible correlation, of Final Fantasy IV‘s Prologue (which was present in the original Final Fantasy from 1987) and Link to the Past‘s ending theme. Though Bob Mackey from 1UP states he doesn’t want to accuse anyone of foul play, he does note the strong resemblance of Link to the Past‘s theme to the Final Fantasy tune.

Hit the jump to see the video for yourself!

Though Bob Mackey makes good points, and this likeness is certainly something other fans have noticed, composers have been arranging and rearranging other composers’ music for a very long time, and so it is not out of the ordinary for one composer to borrow a motive from another composer’s work. The multiple differences in the tunes should be enough for Link to the Past‘s ending theme to be considered “original”, though it would be interesting to ask Koji Kondo whether he took inspiration from Final Fantasy‘s music.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments!

Maybe the first little intro sounded a little similar, but the overall theme is VERY different in my opinion.

For me: both are a bit different, and not is plagiarism!

Personally, I didn't hear any of the similarities. Either I'm naive or they really are just two different songs.

link to the past is 8bit and final fantasy orchestra but the melodies are quite the same.

I'm not sure I've heard the ending theme to LttP since back when it was new (just haven't been able to finish it! lol). But I'm a HUGE fan of FF music, and being a musician myself I say that those songs are DEFINATELY both based on a similar theme. I'd like to put forth a very obvious answer that no one seems to have considered: there may be an older piece of music or otherwise something popular from that time-frame (when the games where in production, not from their release dates) that both pieces drew from.

I don't think this would even be considered plagarism even in the US since, as others have pointed out, the actual musicality of both pieces is extremely different. They hit upon the same major notes, but they do not directly copy one another. No one has said if the two composers may have even shared ideas and basically came up with two different pieces based on a theme. This is also extremely common throughout history.
