This title is free until Feb. 20, 2012

Despite being well into the new year, Nintendo’s 25th Anniversary celebration of Zelda keeps on giving.  From now until February 20, you can download Four Swords Anniversary Edition for free on your Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS–that’s only seven more days to get your hands on this classic title for the Game Boy Advance.  This multiplayer game features new stages and modes as well as a special “second quest”-like mode called “The Realm of Memories,” which contains new levels based off of previous games from the series.  Read on to learn the full details of this free yet soon-to-be gone gift.

Four Link's working together

Below is an official statement that clarifies the specifics of the download and the game itself:

“In celebration of the series’ 25th anniversary, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords returns – with new additions!

“Introducing The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition, a special — re-release of the Game Boy™ Advance multiplayer game!

“When the evil Wind Mage Vaati escapes from confinement, Link™ must draw upon the power of the legendary Four Sword and save the kidnapped Princess Zelda™!  But there’s a catch — whoever touches the sword will divide into multiples!  Play in single player mode and control two heroes, or play via DS Wireless Play with up to four friends!  Hurdle through challenges by using teamwork as you scramble to collect the most Rupees!  The Great Fairies are always watching your efforts, and will reward your bravery based on how many Rupees you collect.

“This edition includes — new stages and modes.  Upon completing the main quest, relive memorable moments from the past with levels based on previous Zelda games in ‘The Realm of Memories.’  The bold and daring can test their adventuring skills in ‘The Hero’s Trial.’”Now on two screens!

Below are some frequently asked questions about the download and the game itself:

Q:  Can DSi owners and 3DS owners play multi-player?
A:  Yes, since this is actually a DSiWare game, 3DSs play it in DS mode.

Q:  How does single-player work?
A:  The game gives you a dummy partner to be able to do puzzles, but only 1-2 player puzzles.  If you can get 3 or 4 people together to play, slightly different 3/4-player puzzles become available.

Q:  How do I get this on my DSi or 3DS?
A:  Go to the Nintendo DSi Shop on a DSi or the eShop on a 3DS.

Q:  Can I download this on a DSi and 3DS on the same Club Nintendo account?
A:  Yes, and it’s recommended, since it’s free.  It should come with a post-play survey, but only one per account (or one per member of a family account).

Q:  Is multi-player online or local only?
A:  No online.  Can only be played locally for multi-player.  Hey, it’s free!

Q:  It’s blurry on my 3DS. Can this be fixed?
A:  Yes, by running in native DS resolution mode.  Press/Hold Select before choosing the game to run it in native resolution mode.  (Thanks, fernoca!)

Q:  I may need to clean my fridge.  How many blocks does it take?
A:  114 blocks on DSi and 115 blocks on 3DS. (Thanks, Aad!)

Q:  Can this be played through Download Play on a DS or DSLite?
A:  No.

What are you waiting for?  If you haven’t already downloaded the free Four Swords Anniversary Edition, which comes packed with new content and both single and multiplayer capabilities, get to it!  Only seven days remain until the free download period ends on February 20.

Oh my god why does Nintendo make this game for a limited time. :-(

  • Ricky

Socks, cuz I'll be getting a 3DS for my birthday, which is in March.

I wonder though, will they remove this game from the eShop, or will they just change it so we have to pay for it?

  • CJ!

    I got a 3ds yesterday…how do I get to the E shop?

  • saint_tails_09

Crap, I don't have a 3DS or DSi. The most recent Nintendo handheld I have is the Gameboy Advance.. And that original horizontal rectangle one at that -.- Yay for being poor!

To get to the e-shop you first connect to the internet in the settings, and then in the settings find the auto update in the "other settings" this part might take a while but it should install the eshop for your 3ds, from there search "zelda" and scroll a few to find it. Hope this helped :D

I too would like to know whether it will be removed or simply become a paid app. I don’t get a 3ds for a few weeks and I NEED this game!

I don't know (sorry! I don't have a 3DS, either), but if you're not getting a 3DS for a few weeks, then there's no need to worry about it. If it will still be available for pay (which, logically, I'm guessing it would be), then it'll be there. If not, then it won't. Really the only time constraint worries people should be having is trying to download it before the free deadline passes, if they already have a 3DS.

My ignorant motherfucking cousin doesn't want to play this with me.
